Moving from TAS to WA

Hi Guys,

I'm going to be making a move from Tasmania to WA shortly. I've never before moved further than a few suburbs away, I was wondering what companies are good for moving furniture and a car interstate. Also, any tips that I should know about before the move?

Thanks!

Wow, that's quite the move! At least you're moving while it's cool here….Summer will be a shock- lol. Where in WA are you planning to live? That'll make a big difference in recommendations.

Not sure about Tas drivers, but no one here understands "merging".

    ;)

    • I'm not looking forward to that summer… Lots of air conditioning! Probably Victoria Park at this rate

Are you needing to be that near to Perth?

Asking, as the rents are very high compared to (what I would consider) nicer/cheaper rentals along the train line south….

        • I'll be working on Pier Street, think that's close enough. Also want NBN

Are you paying or is a new job paying?

If it's a new job paying and you need to do the "3 quotes" dance, get a quote from Grace. They're always crazy expensive (because they will wrap all your plates, supply boxes etc), so a good one to throw in to make everyone else look cheap.

    • Work is giving me a lump sum to move. Want to keep as much of it as possible! So… Grace isn't on the cards then?

      • I've never used them, because they're very expensive. OTOH I've known people to use them for international moves or when they had young children and no time, and they said they were good.

Depending on the value of your car it may or may not be worth shipping it here, rather just selling it and buying another one when you get here. If you do want to bring it, perhaps ferry to Melbourne and then on the train is the best bet. Google "transport car Melbourne to Perth" and there's quite a few companies doing it.

    • Cheers, I'll look it up although I don't think I'll have time to go to Melbourne myself…

My fiancée and I have just done this move back to WA (Perth). I moved down to TAS (Hobart) myself in 09 but for many reasons have come back for the moment.

It may seem quite a big undertaking but it doesn't have to be - particularly having driven across the country twice now with the car (Commodore sedan) loaded with as much stuff as possible.

If you're near the Hobart area (which according to your profile you are) have a look at Bells Removals, they're part of the Australian Movers Group.

Our stuff (just boxes we packed ourselves, 3 cubic metres of space purchased for ~$1100) did take 3 months to arrive, but this could vary greatly (ie. quicker) depending on what requirements you have and services they may be able to offer etc. Productreviews have a 4.3/5 score for Bells Removals and I would recommend them.

With your car Bones provides valid points. If you aren't going to undertake the drive (and 2 people makes this easier) then no idea if Bells do vehicles but google any of the transport companies and take your pick really. You'll probably find quite a few sounding dodgy ones though.

I considered shipping my VZ Commodore over but I think it worked out cheaper in our case to drive across. Probably looking at $2k to ship a vehicle, and they can pick up from Hobart area and it'll arrive somewhere in Perth etc.

Alternatvely, as Bones pointed out if you took yourself and vehicle across the ferry, you could load the car onto the train and take a flight out from Melbourne afterwards. It will take at least a week via train and arrives for pickup at East Perth train station. Cost wise I don't think its going to be much different but sounds like in your circumstances this isn't a valid option anyway.

Finally, I'll just comment on weather differences as the opening posts commented on. Yes, basically Jan-March you'll have the summer heatwaves and location in Perth will have a bearing on how much heat you'll feel, but generally a Hobart 25 is equivalent to a Perth 35-36. The Hobart sun is much hotter due to a lack of ozone layer etc. But will be a bit of a shock as my times in Hobart we never had more than 2 days in a row of 35+ whereas here get used to 9-10+ days of 35+

For winter I've always found the nights here in the Perth area much colder than Hobart, the only difference is the days generally warm up here unlike Tassie = cold all day.

Although I'm now living in the Perth Hills, more than half of the days recently since we've moved in last month have been just as cold as bloody Hobart (most of our maximums have been 12-14 in the hills with plenty of -1 to -3 nights)
