JB Hi-Fi - The Honeymoon is over

From humble beginnings to aggressive expansion, JB HiFi was always the place to get a deal. As is plastered over the door "Always lowest prices".

Unfortunately now it seems almost everything is RRP. I've priced several big ticket items at JB recently only to be given "best possible price to buy right now" at slightly less than RRP when these items are readily available elsewhere for significantly less (and if I understand correctly these prices are visible to them on their screen). Yes they will price match. Screw "price matching", why should they benefit from my price research and discounts at other stores. From now on I buy at the store that instigates the discount, I'm not supporting the JB drug anymore.

RIP JB Hifi, it was good while it lasted.

Let the door hit you on the way out.

I've never bought anything there. Looks like that's not about to change.

Don't worry JB will be heading down the same street as Dick Smith if they don't start closing stores. Unlike Harvey Norman they simply have too many stores with some just 100s of metres apart.

I never do price matches. I always go with the store that offers the deal. I figure if they are willing to cut their profit to try and boost sales, I'll reward them with my money.

I agree with you, I also prefer to reward the guys that offer the deal first; however, there's some times when for reasons of stock availability or travel distance/time/shipping costs it's simply not practical, so in these cases a price match is not a bad option.

Price matches are a way for retailers to punish those who offer lower prices. If company A goes out on a limb and discounts prices and company B takes their business anyway through price matching, it signals to the market to not lower prices. It's one of the ways that retailers indirectly collude.

      • That's an interesting perspective. I had not considered that before. Thanks for commenting.

      • Wait what ? As far as I know, price matching is for the same product (same company) at a different retailer.

      • How is it collusion when big companies use this method to drive small independent companies out of business?

Feel like being cheated. Bought a 'on sale' iPad air 1 six days ago, but found it was $70 expensive than Office Works.

    • +2

You opened a discussion thread on your JB Hifi's purchase and no one agreed that you were "cheated" though. Grow up

      • Thanks slyblu for your reply. I tried to reply you yesterday but the system only allows 5 comment for new user in 24hrs. Anyway, you are right and this chaos was mainly because of my lack of research before shopping. And thankfully my issue was kindly solved by JB store.

In terms of wording, maybe I shall carefully chose 'misled' instead of 'cheated'. I am a regular costumer to that shop, and honestly I used to reckon that the 'lowest price' banner at the entrance did mean kind of price guarantee. Also the pad I bought was with 'clearance' sticker. However the $70 gap was really a surprise.

Now the my issue was solved with store credit, thanks to the kindness of that store manager. Next time I will surely do enough research before purchasing.

    • Once JamesDW actually spoke with JB, they resolved the issue

I went to the JB again and staff there were kind to help me

  • They can be cheap, but only on specials these days. They don't appear to do one local rival store's stunt of upping their prices a few days before a "sale" but I have only ever had tablet or computer bargains there with price match. I did grab a Nexus 6 for $360 during the EOFY clear-out tho:-)

I always ask for a manager's discount and unless it is something like GoPro or Apple, invariably get 10-15%.

    • Always ask for discounts

  • being a bit of a movie buff… JB is always helpful in locating that movie you've heard of… but don't know the title to. will order in any rare or scarce movie if you ask… same with video games. this doesn't happen at old man normons… $4'599 for a phucken couch?

I never got a wedding invite or nothing…

  • That retail sector has seen consolidation and tougher conditons and yet JB still do ok. They did just buy the Good Guys. With that in mind, why should they give you a break if you're dumb enough to buy there?

    • Are you saying the honeymoon isn't over?

I remember in the 90's you'd go in and buy something from JB and they would throw in something almost every time. Free CD. Headphones, speakers, awww the good old days. There are deals to be had but few and far between.
If I'm after a new TV I'll hit JB, HN, GG, Whats your best price. Then give my business to the cheapest.
Last year I bought a Canon5D JB got within $300 of online pricing just by asking best price. I thought that was pretty good for the convenience of Au Drop off warranty
