Hey all.
My mum is going on holidays to Argentina to visit her sister and wants to buy her a tablet for general use. I think basically they want to video chat with each other. Whats the best tablet currently for around the $150 mark or less? Thanks

My mum is a tigharse so she probably won't go for that. If she was computer literate she would probably rule OzBargain :P. I'll see if there is an second hand Nexus or something. Thanks for the input.

Ah yes, the old, "I just want it for general use" turns into, "how come i can't play games or apps from google store" - Or where is the istore,,
Tell 'em girls the'll have to spend 250-350 if they want a basic one… An expert would cope with a $150 tablet but i doubt an experts sister would…
The only website you need to know - techtablets.com
I own the samsung galaxy tab 4 8.0 (SM-T330). It's okay and does the job, a bit slower than my phone but big screen and plays youtube fine etc. Unfortunately I can't find many retailers selling it these days.. Here's an overpriced ebay link. I picked it up through OzB about 1.5yrs ago for about $200.

JB-HiFi are currently selling the galaxy tab 3 8.0 for around $160, but I can't comment on the quality. I do know that this runs with only 1gb of ram instead of 1.5gb though like the tab 4.

Otherwise, you could try the Nexus 7

Thanks for the feedback gentlemen. I've tried telling my mum to invest a little more but she is a true OzBargainer at heart. I'll do the best I can with the budget.
$150 won't get you very far.
Look for something used off gumtree.
My friends ended up getting those tablets from Aldi at that price, and it seemed good for its price.
I'm not sure you would like to order something like gearbest.com (Chinese Online vendors) because they can take a long time to ship and receive.
Tablets seem to be mostly a fad these days.
But on my shortlist would be the iPad (32GB or more; mini 2, Air 1, or better). And the Nvidia Shield Tablet.
These are pricier but are the tablets that are worth keeping, see if you can find a cheap/used one of these.
There are some Windows 8 based tablets, but I wouldn't quite recommend them.
