  • Daily Budget and Approx location ?

    • I am located in Ainslie, Canberra. I have used close to 3 GB in the past 1o days

  • Strange, iinet have always been really good at troubleshooting over the phone.

A week without it working and they can't diagnose it….?!

    • No. To be honest, its been 2 weeks and I have never seen a horrible support like this one. I am guessing that its a faulty modem. But they asked me to replace it myself as its out of warranty. They dint even send someone to diagnose and confirm that the modem if faulty. So strange and they made me so frustrated.

Anyways that is the reason I am looking to use mobile data now.

can you borrow a friends modem then to see if it isnt just your modem that is the fault?

        • Yes thats what exactly I am trying to do now. I checked with my friends already but couldnt get any unused one. I am looking to buy one from gumtree for cheap.

        • @arkr16:
doesnt have to be an unused (new) one, you just need to borrow one for an hour.

also, ask on whirlpool forums. someone there might help you with diagnosing your modem problem/proving the modems faulty.

        • @PVA:

Its a coincidence, I am just about to do that, thanks :-)

A faulty modem would've been their suggestion (after diagnostics) on the very first call.

I've dealt with them a few times and that was always part of the diagnostics on the initial call - try a different modem.

        You can't say they've taken 2 weeks, more like you've taken 2 weeks…!

        • They dint do that in the first call. I have tried my best to get support, all in vain. Anyways Iam suffering without internet. I wouldnt have caused it to happen

A modem is as cheap as $19 to diagnose your connection.

          @Spackbace: So true.

Spending $10-20 on a sim for 3gb for 10 days vs $19 on a Modem. Which is the best Ozbargainer way.

Now if its not the modem you have a backup for the future. If it is the modem then problem solved.

Plus borrowing a modem means you have to setup and reset the borrowed modem when you finish

@Spackbace: Thank you for your suggestion. I bought the same modem the link you sent.

  • I found this deal, but its not available in Canberra stores

  • With iiNet if they can't work it out they blame it on your modem. I was sent a brand new one, and no cigar. I was without internet for almost a fortnight, and in the end it was some stupid issue with their billing system. No matter what people did at my end or their end it just wouldn't fix.

You could just go with a Telstra Prepaid cap which will give you 1.5GB Day + 1.5GB Night for $30.00, and then just send the $30 credit to a friend in $10 lots via Me2U.

It would help to know if you want to use a laptop, which you could tether to your phone via Bluetooth, or a PC which will need a USB Modem.

    • Good suggestion I will definitely look to find some one, thanks

    • Do i need to have minimum balance to make use of the data during the validity period?

      • Not sure, if in doubt keep $1.

  • I got tired of screwing around with ADSL, so I just switched to Vividwireless which is 4G unlimited for $89/month. Not the cheapest, but definitely the least hassle. Supports a household of heavy video streamers just fine. Plus, when we move, we carry router to new house, switch on, and have internet. No Telstra infrastructure involved at all.

    • VividWireless uses the Optus network infrastructure, so you need to check coverage in your area.

    • Thank you for your suggestion

  • Optus $30 sim starter packs. You can often get them on sale for $15, sometimes $10 (not such a good deal at full price of $30). Activate on My Prepaid Daily Plus, 500mb/$2/day, automatically bumps up to maximum 1gb/$4/day. Discard once credit runs out, and activate another.

    • Thank you prior to seeing your post i did the same thing. Thanks heaps though

  • Hi all, I bought a new modem for 19$ and I called IINET again. Now they are saying there are 2 accounts linked to the same person. Primary account holder is my landlord. And for broadband they suggested to call again on Monday and they will transfer to Transact.

In the interim, I got a new unused optus sim from my friend and activated it. I recharged it for 10$ under MyPrepaidDaily plus plan. I can use upto 500MB / $2 / day. Thats what i m using now.

Thank you all for your suggestions so far.

    It certainly helped me.

  • Just an update to my post,

I ended up reporting the problem to TIO (Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman) and now the issue is resolved.

There was a problem with the junction box at the street post which the TransACT field technician had to come and fix it.

I have got compensation of 2 months free of charge Internet.

Thank you for all your help
