Asus X205 11.6" QC Atom 2GB 32GB Notebook On Clearance $279 at The Good Guys

50

Bought this recently from The Good Guys for $279 Click And Collect, you can also get it delivered for $5 (maybe more depending on location). Pretty good deal and even though it only has a 36GB HDD and 2GB RAM it does what I need it to do for uni, great little computer imo. Also it's $20 cheaper than JB Hifi are selling it for.

tonyjzx has found a better deal at Bing Lee for $248, but if youre not in NSW it'll cost you $10 for delivery - https://www.binglee.com.au/asus-x205ta-fd0060ts-eeebook-x205…

Oh ok thanks for posting. So yours is $248 looks like the same computer but cos theres no stores at least for me in Melbourne Id have to add $10 delivery bringing it to $258. I did get a $30 in store credit at the time cos I spent over $300, but that promotions finished now so I guess in the end it was a little cheaper considering all that. Yours is a better deal, so maybe I should remove mine. Thanks for posting! :)

EDIT: Ok yeah it looks identical, only difference is yours is model X205TA-FD0060 and mine is X205TA-FD0060TS. Dont know what the TS at the end stands for and how it makes it different.

Ill put your deal at the top in the main post :)

You know the world is changing when your mobile phone has more RAM than a laptop :-S

When your phone has more RAM than Apollo 11

      • Flight computers, even aboard NASA's space shuttle, is also relatively speaking very low tech.

It has less than one percent of the power of an Xbox 360 game console. The latest Orion manned spacecraft for e.g runs on a pair of IBM PowerPC 750X single-core processors, which was from 2002.

That being said a space shuttle has to be manned by a crew and the crew bring laptops with them, so you can't say a space flight requires little computational power when you need a lot of highly educated crew to get the job done.

      • When my TV box has as much ram as a laptop and only cost $50

      • My best friend's father worked for Martin-Marietta in Orlando & had a hand in the programming for the Mercury rockets. I remember him saying that the code which launched/controlled them was approx. 8 kb !

Can't say I enjoy using my Win10 Baytrail 2GB RAM ultraportable nowadays… even web browsing performance is pretty poor.

My next machine will be something with upgradable RAM and SSD, e.g Dell Ins 3000

    • Oh damn sigh that looked like a good deal. Oh well :/

Tried adding some extra RAM (if it's possible)?

      • Not possible. The CPU is the main bottleneck, as is the EMMC memory.

    • Ok nice find. Deals in main post include 1 yr of Microsoft Office, yours doesnt and is a $149 optional extra. Your deal is awesome if you already have Microsoft Office and can install it yourself. I imagine refurbished computers would run just as well as new, Im not sure. Thanks heaps for posting! :)

This has been TGG regular price for atleast the last few weeks I have been looking. I purchased (using $200 store credit from previous deal) the newer Asus E200HA for $290(asked for best price), and even this newer model has randomly been $279 in my google targeted advertising recently. Works well for my specific, limited purposes, and was basically an iPad replacement for some tasks where having a full keyboard & full windows is better suited.
    I won't neg this but I don't see a bargain here.

(also, the minor variations in model numbers will likely refer to different colours and the like, and may be exclusive to 1 retailer or another to prevent price-matching)

    • Thanks for the info re model no etc, wondered if it might be a colour thing. Didnt think about the price matching angle but youd be 100% right there

  • Guess you can use to watch Netflix in bed

    • Yeah was impressed with the screen quality when I checked them all out at JB Hifi. The screen quality was better visually (unsure of specs) than a lot of the $450 range laptops

  • 2GB is "ok" for Win 10 - just cant multitask too many things at one time out of it.
Think the main killer is the "32GB" MMC - which actually works out to be 28GB in reality. After installing Win10, you are left with 10GB or so. Barely enough to stick Office on there and some common apps. Plus The regular updates to the OS in patches, you'd be left with barely anything left.

    • Have put a microSD in to save files to. Have only essentials eg. Windows 10 and Office, added a couple of light weight programs but runs fine. Definitely wouldnt want to tax it with anything but it does the job for uni and have had a few ppl at uni eye it off as it looks nice and is a good size and weighs next to nothing. Is good for what I want it for and am happy with it :)

      • The problem isnt about the MicroSD expansion but mainly the Operating System and apps itself. You cannot put those on the MicroSD card without affecting it. The problem is that each update you get from MS, the updated files actually grow with more patches and new capabilities being introduced. You might have 8GB to spare as an example today since its pretty new. But the more you use it and update, the bigger the Windows folder grows and in 12 months time, it will drop down to 6GB or less. Not to also mention the MB's of updates that come in for Office apps.

        • Yeah the computer actually crashed when I did my first/only update a couple of days ago. Got it working again through a reset, long press 5 secs+ on start button and it started again and has worked fine ever since. Was actually thinking of turning off updates. I dont know, its good for now and does what I want it too. Its my first ever laptop too, am kind of enjoying having it. Will get a better one down the track I guess but for now is ok.
