VW Golf 118TSI DSG Delay Issue?

Hey Guys, so I test drove a 2011 VW Golf 118TSI with DSG noticed something. It's not the usual DSG delay complain so that's off the table. What I noticed is basically when I floor the accelerator from stop, it revs and speed upto 40 and hangs in there without changing the gears. I have to get the pedal off a bit and press it again to get it to change gears and if I floor it again, it revs and goes up to 60 or so and hangs there until I take my foot off and accelerate again. Is this normal behavior or is something terribly wrong with the car? This doesn't happen when you don't floor the accelerator, say if you pushed it around 70%, gears change as they are supposed to and car moves.

Any ideas? Thanks!

  • problem with DSG clutch. Expensive fix. I had mine replaced under warranty yesterday - happy to sell you mine :o))

    • thought as much, I can live with the delays but it doesn't make sense if it doesn't change gears when I floor the accelerator cz I'm asking it to launch right? What was the issue with yours mate?

      • This thread suggests that it's a safety measure though :-O

        http://www.golfmk6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=71509

"According to the dealer, when the throttle is pushed 100% from the start, the computer cuts off power because the transmission can't handle that much torque. I was told to only give the car ~75% pedal input when starting from a start or else the engine would cut all power. This is a safety protection according to the dealer. "

      • the issue with mine was that once the engine revolutions dropped below 1,500rpm automatic gear changes were so much harder to come by

  • When I 1st had problems 4 years ago I kept telling the dealer what I was experiencing but the dealer's comeback was " the VAG analysis shows transmission is performing as it should ". This went on for a few months until the gearbox got stuck in D2 driving along and VW were forced to replace the transmission.

I think the dramas with VW's manipulations of various systems are well documented,

    • duh, that's too bad, I kinda liked the car, should steer away from it I guess :S Thanks for the info mate!

      • Mind you since then nothing has happened to the car apart from the clutches being replaced yesterday after 50,000klm. It is a great car otherwise. Would have no hesitation in buying again - now that I know the faults I know whom to turn to and when.

        • that's the thing, the car is well priced and I actually like it, but this whole accelerator thing is holding me back, should drive another similar dsg and see if that's the case

  • DSG = time bomb disaster.
Google will show you why. Do not buy it , they are not worth the hassle/

  • if it's the 7sp DSG - RUN AWAY VERY VERY FAST
it it's the 6sp DSG - you can afford to walk away, that is not a usual gear change

    • it was a 7sp DSG and yeah, drove two more of the same and they don't have the same problem so definitely a fault with that DSG

      • DO NOT EVEN WASTE YOUR TIME LOOKING AT ANY 7SP DSG's

    • Yup. The 7 speed DSG is a dry clutch and the pre 2013 dry clutch is not reliable.

The new ones are slightly better although I cannot say what changed. I just stray away from dry clutch because it is a design to address budget, not reliability nor performance.
