Moving to iPhone from Samsung Galaxy

I'm considering to move from Samsung to iPhone.

The main reason I'm considering this is because when I upgrade my Samsung Galaxy to another Galaxy, there is just so much settings I need to copy, and I always miss some. Some of these are: Fuel Log, SMS, Whatsapp, Trigger, home screen settings, game saves, and perhaps more but I just don't remember.

I upgraded my wife's iPhone recently and it was just too easy, everything stays there, and I mean everything. Just plug in, plug out, plug new one in, click here and there, and done… Something that my wife can do it, only she can't be bothered.

I have been using Galaxy for a while, since S3, then Note 3, then now S6. I did own iPhone 3G however.

With new iPhone 7+ and Galaxy Note 7 coming out, I'm seriously thinking of moving to iPhone.
Btw, I can't root, or flash, or jailbreak and I don't want to.

This is your opportunity to say whatever you want about iPhone or Android, whatever it is.

Some of the ideas to discuss:

  1. Price point and resale value, including with plan or outright.
  2. Camera - I like just to snap as quickly as possible, I need to snap my kid, and they just won't stay still. Not too happy with my S6 in that matter.
  3. Apps that aren't/won't be available.
  4. Features that aren't/won't be available.

EDIT: My usage is mostly Internet browsing, a few pandora & netflix, few calls, lots of text & email.

TLDR: What to expect when moving from Samsung Galaxy to iPhone?

EDIT: I have decided that there will be some features in Samsung that I will miss badly, like its open ecosystem. So I'm going to suck it up, I'm writing a checklist of things to back up, hopefully I get it right…

    • Yeah I think my mistake in the last restore was not backing it up to pc first.

Even so some settings or data are hidden inside android folder.

Lesson learned, next time have to copy everything.

  • I've not used a Samsung phone before, but with androids there's a setting to automatically backup data, and when setting up a new phone, it should allow you to login and restore all settings from the cloud? I've done it a few times with new phones, and it automatically downloads my apps, remembers my WiFi password, account details etc ?

    • I don't expect iCloud to know so much about android?

      • +1

Actually, it appears Apple has given it some thought:
        Switch to iPhone

Everything about iPhone is designed to be easy. That includes switching to one. With just a few steps, you can migrate your content automatically and securely from your Android phone with the Move to iOS app. Or visit an Apple Store — we’ll help you move to your new iPhone and get you all set up. Either way, it couldn’t be simpler.

        • Contacts
        • Message history
        • Camera photos and videos
        • Web bookmarks
        • Mail accounts
        • Calendars
        • Free apps*
        • Free apps? The link says apps that available for both Google play and itunes.
Is that mean whatever app I already purchased in Google, will be given away for free in iTunes?

          That's gold!

        • @fm: I believe it means those apps that are free on both platforms, and which you happen to have on your phone, will be migrated across.

    • That works to an extent and only applied to google apps. Until marshmallow there was no native Android method for apps to backup their own data. Even now on 6.0 I have a few apps which havent implemented the backup feature.

  • Don't know about you, but I prefer starting fresh with new settings when I get a new phone. If I just restored the settings I might feel "same old, same old".

Google does back up important stuff. On Sony, I had a way to transfer all my photos, videos, music and settings to my new Xperia Z5 Premium from Z1. So may be you need to look at other Android brands that do solve your problem. I wouldn't believe that Apple is the only company offering this service.

  • Not an avid iphone user but having both (S5 personal and iphone work) I can say that:

iphones have better screen light/brightness especially under the sun, better camera speed/response, and most importantly have a proper working front flash

I'm still a samsung person and won't change to iphone for personal use, to me the android system is just so much more personal, iOS feels like a jail (hence jailbreak I guess?). On top of that we have features from years ago that the iphone JUST got: NFC, wireless charging, split screen and more app accessibility (coupons for example, apple doesn't allow coupons on in-app purchases).
