this is not that cheap at all.

Much better providers out there who offer a far cheaper usenet blocks, and that are based out of the Netherlands so that DCMA is not as quick.

    I would recommend Usenet.farm

    • Seconded. Plus, usenet.farm have a special on at the moment -% of what degrees Celsius in Amsterdam. 15Euro for 500GB normally.

  • Thanks, I've been waiting for the 500GB block to drop again (to top-up). Might come in handy now KAT is no more.

Whilst I would never pay US$45 for 500GB (full price) for usenetdirect, you won't find a better provider at the US$20 price point. Under AUD$0.06/GIG.

  • what do ppl do with these "newsgroups", I know they d/l stuff with it but why would someone pay for it when they could just use BT?

You are enabled to get the latest "news" faster on the "newsgroups"

    • but why would someone pay for it when they could just use BT?

Your download speeds are not dependant on peers or seeds. Something obscure uploaded years ago, will download just as quickly as a popular file uploaded today. Most people to Usenet to supplement BT usage. I mainly use it for older stuff, that's not available on BT, or if I want a poorly seeded file quickly.

      • ic this makes sense now…but wouldnt each newsgroup have different stuff? So how do u know what u need would be there? ie. you might need to signup to like 10 different newsgroups???

        • Ideally indexers help you on this, and generally community based indexers expect you to contribute to continue having access, otherwise it will be limited.

Without indexing the news, how do you know news exists?

        • @pax: oh so are you saying doesnt matter who you signup with, all newsgroups have access to the same indexers/stuff?

        • @homersyd:

all newsgroups have access to the same indexers/stuff

Yes. Premium Usenet services have content going back further in time. Newgroupdirect has retention of about 8 years.

You use your news group service with an indexing site to find content much like BT sites. OzNzb.com is a good example.

        • @homersyd: All providers have access to the same newsgroups. Some providers archive different groups for different lengths of time. But nobody cares too much about which group something is posted to. Instead you use the services of an indexer to grab an NZB file. This file is a list of news articles that contain file fragments. It doesn't include the provider so it doesn't matter which provider you're using. A downloader on your computer can read the NZB file and retrieve and reassemble the file from the NZB.

Using a US based newgroup provider you'll often find that some fragments have been quickly removed with DMCA requests (copyright takedowns) but the a$$holes that submit these requests only demand the takedown of enough files that you can't repair the file. Which means you still download most of the file before you discover you can't reassemble it. This wastes time and bandwidth.

Using a European provider is slightly better as they respond to DMCA requests a little slower.

Someone also asked about why you'd do this rather than using a torrent: a torrent works fastest when you're uploading. But upload speeds are crap in Australia. I'm on ADSL (not ADSL2) and get 39kb upload at the best of times. Additionally, when you're using torrents, there's every chance you'll hit a copyright holders honeypot and they have direct evidence that you are attempting to download that content. (Dallas Buyers Club) Their case is even stronger when you include that you've become an uploader and thus are distributing copyrighted material. In the case of newsgroups, only the provider knows what you're accessing. And their business is fundamentally built on not telling anyone.

  • What I'm saying is that without an indexer you would need searching through 10 of thousands of news groups to find the news you are after.

    • Yes and no

you can search on a site like binsearch.info for what ever you are after and mark the parts to create and download a nzb file. Thou you do run the risk of downloading password protected and virus infected files. Using a indexing site usually means its safe as members upload the files, much like a private torrent site
