CTEC20

Hi All!

In light of the recent eBay 20% off deals, I have come across this monitor that seems to be the cheapest ($951.80 is the cheapest on Staticice as at 19/07/2016).

Seems to be a good contender against the ASUS ROG Swift however I don't have either monitors so best to look up your own reviews.

Use the code CTEC20 when checking out to apply the discount.

Original eBay 20% off tech deal post

    This isn't an Xbox One

    • Sorry, the auto-suggested title somehow changed the words.

      Updated.

    • +7

Looks like a Xbox One to me.

  • +11

I have this monitor. I paid $1077 delivered back in March. I have never been happier with a monitor. I'm tempted to grab a second one. Can't recommend this enough.

    • +1

      Details please…

I've been wondering if I suck at close range in BF4 because of the sync issues.

      • +2

Could be server tick issues if you're playing on a 30 tickrate server.

      • +13

You'll still suck, but 144 Hz refresh rate does improve the experience.

    • Is this more for gaming or would it be good for drawing/art too?

      • +3

G-Sync and 144hz is more for gaming, they make things look smoother. IPS (Better colours) and 1440p (Higher resolution) will be great for drawing. You can get monitors much cheaper without the gaming features

        • +2

Yeah if you're so keen on drawing I'd go 4k for slightly cheaper. No need for G-sync or high frequency

        • @blighst: Ok guys thanks for the info

        • Decided to go for the Dell UP2716D 27" LED for $679, less $10 cash rewards so $669. Wifey is super excited. She's been using 2 old 22" screens for years now.

        • +1

          @Putnum: Looks great!

        • @Putnum: Any reason you choose this $679 U2716D over the cheaper $560 U2715H?

        • @edfoo: Colours. The amount of colours was important to wifey and the higher model does the full 1.07 billion, whereas the cheaper one was only about 16 million I think?

        • +1

@Putnum: Ah right, I have mistaken your UP2716D with U2717D. Seems like that 1.07 billion colour palette is better for photo editing work.

        • I agree with what has been said. Nvidia gaming features add about $200 to the cost of a monitor. Get a Dell IPS monitor instead when they are on sale (or refurbished).

Dell has monotors that support Adobe RGB gamut, but only purchase one if you know you are going to be working with programs supporting Adobe RGB (like Photoshop). The reason is that these high gamut models suffer when having to work in a standard sRGB colour space, the colours are lacking saturaton. 16:10 is the best aspect ratio but the only affordable 16:10 monitors are 24 inch inch. 30 inch 16:10 cost $2000 :(

  • +1

Found a review of it on OCN, seems Acer wins out a bit. I'm surprised they said the colour was about the same.

  • +2

Great monitor, got this 2 weeks ago at RRP. Very happy with it! At this price its a no brainer if you are looking for a 144hz+ monitor

  • Bought one last night. Shipped this afternoon. Not thrilled about fast way though.

  • I have the old model of this monitor. Very happy with it.

  • Yeah I ordered one of these from futu yesterday. Really looking forward to it.

Looked like it tended to be one of the items that didn't get pushed up in price before the ebay promo.

It had also read that there was only a couple of these left on the ebay listing. Looks to have been changed since though.

    • No, they just didn't bother to reset the price back from the EOFY sale.

  • +3

Ordered the same monitor from Futu during the last 20% off promotion on Ebay. It's fantastic, and the goofy red stand and PREDATOR logo aren't nearly as garish in real life as you might think.

    • +1

Not sure if I'm a more-ron but the stand was extremely difficult to put into place. Almost took it down to the local computer store to get it installed.

      • -2

        Pro tip: it's 'moron'

Anyways, that info could be useful for those who buy it.

      • the stand was easy to install………… did u try doing it while doing a handstand ?

  • Have people who bought this used a G-sync monitor before? Or one with this high a refresh rate?

Did you notice an improvement and feel like the price was worth it?

    • +2

      Did you notice an improvement

Oh, definitely. I used to game a 40" LCD 60hz before I bought this. After testing out 144hz I could not believe something so smooth existed. I even manually set it to 60hz to compare and it felt like my computer was lagging. G-sync is great but actually causes older games to lag really bad so you need to turn it off (San Andreas for example).

and feel like the price was worth it?

I paid $1077 and have never once regretted it. For $876 this is definitely a no brainer if you're upgrading from a standard monitor and play a lot of video games.

      • +4

Agree, 144hz is the shiznit. You can't go back to 60hz once you've gone 144hz.

      • Well I've been on a standard 1366x768 laptop monitor for the past 5 years, so consider me intrigued.

        • +1

You're not going to be able to drive a 1440p 144Hz screen properly with a laptop. Not for gaming, anyway.

        • @elusive: Oh of course not, no I have bought a new PC and need a monitor. This will be it :)

        • @Richy: ooh specs?

        • +1

@elusive: Pretty much ended up with this - http://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/H8ZMZ8

        • +1

@Richy: Nice, should be perfect with this monitor then!

      • Do you notice it at 60fps or is it only noticeable above?

  • This or a 27" Dell Ultrasharp ahhhhh can't decide!

    • I recently got a P2715Q. Looks beautiful, but the terrible FPS pushed me into buying a GTX 1080 and even that can't manage 60 on some games.

If you play twitch games like CS, I'd say get this one. The Dell one is beautiful, but not optimal for gaming.

    • +1

      yuck.

Dell Monitors are crap for gaming.

Get a low response time and high refresh rate monitor.
Whether it's IPS or TN depends on your bank.

      • I play a ton of FPS but also use my PC for commercial photo/video editing where colour accuracy is important. So it's a colour accuracy vs gaming experience trade-off for me. Knowing Ozbargain I'll probably end up with 1 of each… :(

        • +1

Ach, right in the middle of two requirements.

Which Dell monitor were you looking at?

If you do plan to get both within the next half-year, then you should probably go for this first - I think Dell is due for new models soon-ish.

        • The acer is a good IPS panel with excellent colour reproduction. It really comes down to if you want g-sync or not.

        • @jiberz:

No, it comes down to price. IPS, high refresh rate monitors are expensive.

        • Get two monitors then.

A $400 Dell with 99% sRGB/Adobe RGB etc. and ~$450 high refresh rate monitor for gaming.

        • @cDNA: ma bad. Miss read and thought the other qhd 144hz dell.

        • @cDNA: the monitor in this deal is an IPS high refresh monitor :) jump on it

      • Dell monitors don't even come with any rgb's, and everyone knows more rgb's = better gaming.

  • +1

damn almost read this as the 34" ultrawide at that price!!

  • All - trying to justify this to myself .. does anyone run this with a gtx 1070 and if so any comments or gotchas. There seems to be varying opinions out on the interwebs as to whether the 1070 is sufficient for the monitor.

    • +2

I bought this about a month ago, and I just got my 1070 this morning. Haven't done much testing so far, but I played Witcher 3 for a couple of hours with everything maxed and it was fantastic. 50-60FPS, which looks perfectly smooth with G-Sync (it goes up to the mid 70s without Hairworks), and it feels great. I think 1440p is the sweetspot for a 1070; it's overkill for 1080p and not enough for 4K.

      • Thanks for the speedy response and happy gaming! My fingers getting twitchy now on ebay.

        • +1

Yeah, I have a GTX 1070 and ordered this monitor yesterday.

I'm not expecting any issues regarding the monitor being well utilised. Unless someone corrects me, the GTX 1070 should be able to run many games at 2K resolution at at least 60fps with some up to around 120fps.

I didn't bother with a 4K monitor as I would get sub 60 fps for many games.

          Can't wait!

        • @Richy:

some games yes overwatch csgo dota 2 :)

i have a 1080 for the main reason of playing games at 1440p 144 fps :D its a dream its so fluid

There are a few of us who bought this monitor prior to EOFY

Ive been tracing this thread for thoughts or issues with the monitor
Ive had none and love this monitor was well worth the purchase price

    http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2446350

Please do note there have been a few who have had a issue with a line running down the middle
There hasnt been official word on this issue that has plagued a fair few users

But saying that, ASUS ROG users have been affected as well

Those that do take the punt, it is well worth it
    G-sync, 165Hz its beautiful ….

    • +1

Yeah there seems to be a bit of a lottery with Acer/Asus ROB gaming monitors. I got the acer one originally and had constant signal lost issues (also fairly well reported issue). Eventually took it back to PLE who confirmed it was faulty but had none to exchange. So I went with the more expensive ROG one and won the lottery with a perfect panel.

At the end of the day I have nothing against acer - it just came down to luck. Like those that went ROG and got a terrible panel.

  • +6

These high end 27" monitors will start to hit rock bottom prices soon as competitors have now got the same panel and specs (swap gsync for freesync) for around $400, g-sync models are said to start appearing soon for around $100 more.

Anyone considering buying one now really would be better off waiting for the price drops or the competitors product.

Now only if these Korean companies would start making 1440p ultrawide monitors in the same specs..

    • +2

AOC has a few 27inch (not ultrawide), freesync/gsync 4k monitors, listed as "coming soon" on their website.

    • +1

I'd say the price will go down, but its not going to tank. The slim bezel and GSync will still hold value. Also, it's not all about paper spec.

Back light bleeding isn't pretty on high end monitors, but I have seen Korean monitors with far worse bleed. Their policy on faulty pixels is also less favourable and harder to exchange.

The prices will drop, but they never go anywhere near par with no name budget brands.

    • Freesync monitors might but I will be suprised if Nvidia lets their gsync ones get much cheaper then what they currently sell for

      • Nvidia don't set the prices of the monitors, they are (hopefully) not in collusion/cartel as that would be highly illegal. They wholesale the gsync modules to manufactures and the manufactures set their price.

Last time I checked it was about $100USD for the module.

If they undercut these $1000+ monitors by half but provide the same experience, brand recognition won't mean jack. In fact the price dropa on these high end 27" have already started to fall just on the news that the much cheaper equivalents are on the way.

        • I am not sure what you are saying - offcourse they can influence the price - and it has nothing to do with price collusion. They manufacture a proprietary equipment - charge manufactures a cost to make that technology and that price gets passed onto consumers.

People are currently willing to pay the premium for G-Sync, why would they reduce the price. It is marketed as a premium "luxury" feature - so offcourse they are going to milk it for all it is worth.

Why are Birkin bags more expensive than other handbags? Because it appeals to the "high end enthusiast" who are willing to pay the price difference.

Also with FreeSync as it is available to any manufacturer there is no assurance of quality (even though the gsync panels have had a history of poor QA).

Finally FreeSync is useless if it won't work with Nvidia cards. And as the majority of high end gamers own Nvidia cards - they (like me) will ignore Freesync offerings.

It is irrelevant if a FreeSync is $200 cheaper if it won't do what I need it to

        • @x853:

Here's some examples of why it is price fixing, and why it's highly illegal.
          http://www.cnet.com/au/news/samsung-lg-fined-35-million-over…
          http://www.cnet.com/news/samsung-philips-infineon-fined-mill…

I.E. Samsung can't tell Apple what price Apple is allowed to sell their iPhone just because the iPhone contains Samsung chips.

With your example of Birkin bags, if Birkin sold special thread to other manufactures, and then said to those manufactures that any product they sell with that thread must cost at least x then it's illegal - they can not collude as such in a competitive capitalist society - it's really bad for everyone especially the consumer (I don't understand why you would defend this practise). It's the same with SoC manufactures such as Intel, Samsung or ARM in selling their chips to Apple, HTC or other manufactures. They are not allowed to set a price for the product that contains their components (if not owned by them).

Don't know why you ended up with the final statement you did, I mentioned that the g-sync monitors are already on the way and that the wholesale cost of the modules are around $100USD. For ~2 years Nvidia has been selling the modules to members of the public that want to upgrade their existing monitors with g-sync (provided the monitor supports it).

        • @c0balt: Thank you for the links. The difference here is that it is a proprietary technology which makes it different to what happened in the articles.

It would be price fixing if Acer and ASUS talked about their pricing and capped it. Or coordinated their deals (don't discount by more than $X and I won't either).

This is more like - Nvida make this module - they sell this module at Y price to select manufactures. This component adds to the cost of that good - the cost of passed onto consumers.

Although I agree with you position on the Samsung chip, and maybe I am an idiot - but the two situations are different. When Apple buys a chip it can buy it from many providers as such Samsung would be forced to price their chips competitively. But if there was only one manufacturer of a technology then they can price it what they want.

Nvida are the only ones to make and sell G-Sync modules (or at least own the IP). They can say to Asus and Acer - if you want to use G-Sync you need to pay us $200 per unit. This cost will naturally be passed onto the consumer, whereas the same panel using Free-Sync will not as it won't cost the manufacturer anything extra to have.

This seems perfectly reasonable to me.

I am not defending anticompetitive practices or collusion (I am just saying I [again could just be that I am an idiot] just don't see the pricing of G-Sync tech to be the same.

The Birkin bag was a bad example - I was just trying to say some brands sell of their "premium" high end status. It would be worse for Birkin if they are more widely available - the exclusivity and luxury is what justifies (to those buying not saying it is sensible) the outrageous costs.

All of the most expensive monitors have G-Sync - so that makes consumers feel that to have a high end monitor you need to have G-Sync. This is good for NVIDA and bad for consumers, so my point was - why would they ever want to tarnish that luxury impression (branding) they have? They have no incentive to compete in the lower ends. It would just erode the perceived brand value.

Ahh I was unaware that those modules could be purchased separately. I made the statement out of ignorance. Hmm this might change things for me then, I want to buy an ultrawide and a lot of the nice ultraiwdes are not G-Sync - maybe I can get a decent LG one and put it on myself….

        • @x853:

Those chips or LCD technology are as proprietary as a g-sync module, there is 0 difference here. It's a moot point though as proprietary technology has no relevance to collusion.

But now it appears you are changing your whole argument when you write "This is more like - Nvida make this module - they sell this module at Y price to select manufactures. This component adds to the cost of that good - the cost of passed onto consumers.".

This is exactly what I have been saying. That the cheap freesync monitors that cost ~$400 will cost ~$600 with g-sync if your price of $200 turns out to be correct.

        • @c0balt: That was always my point - it was just that I was unaware that they also sold it directly to the consumer.

If that was your point - then I agree - I was wrong the whole time.

        • @x853:

Fair enough. When you wrote "I will be surprised if Nvidia lets their g-sync ones get much cheaper then what they currently sell for", the wording to me made it sound very much like you were suggesting that they Nvidia could have any say on the price of these monitors (besides the cost of a g-sync module).

        • +1

@c0balt: Poor choice of words - mybad

  • Picked one up from PCbyte during the last eBay sale for about 5 dollars cheaper. Very happy with it no QC issues.

  • pretty good specs - At that price I'd say this is a fine bargain.

Also 27" hits the sweet spot between "not too small"/"not too big".

    G-Sync is nVidia-only, isn't it?

    • Yep

      Freesync for AMD

Meant to also say I am coming from a 30" and have used a 34" Ultrawide and this seems just perfect for me YMMV

      • so what would happen if you hook this into a AMD card?
reading online and AMD claims to have the benefits of Nvidias gsync

    • "not too big".

      What? No such thing …

    • Yeah gsync is nvidia only and freesync is amd only. Fun times.

      • Actually Intel has jumped on the Freesync bandwagon also. So anyone using CPU integrated graphics will benefit.
Doesn't change much for gamers, but it could push things in Freesync's favour in the long run (ie VHS vs BETA)
I personally think that paying extra for an Nvidia exclusive feature is a mistake. They will probably start supporting Freesync in a couple of years anyway as it is software based (G-Sync requires hardware).

  • +3

I hate that high performance stuff has to be so obnoxiously styled. Not all gamers want a HAX0r 1337 spaceship looking hardware, why not offer it in non clashing style?

    • +1

i agree, but the feet don't look anywhere near as bad in person. more dull metallic than glossy and garish.

    • Yeah I agree, if it was just black, I'd be down, but I dont want some edgy looking red and black spaceship.

  • Bought one from PC Byte a few weeks ago during the last sale.

Absolutely fantastic monitor, would highly recommend.

  • Just bought three at 975 each. Great monitors.

Just be mindful that there is an unnecessary and counter intuitive lower bezel. It makes it impossible flush the screens without sanding the bezel away.

  • +1

i own this, and it's a very nice monitor, but there are a lot of QC issues with them (just search out any of the forum threads).

i'd want to be sure i could return it easily if it had bad BLB or colour uniformity. i have no idea what futu are like on this stuff (never bought from them), but wanted to point this out.

  • If you had an AMD graphics card, would buying this make sense as it seems geared towards nVidia re gsync…
You'd still get 144mhz refresh rate even with an AMD yeah? Or would it only run at say 60mhz until paired with an nVidia?

    • ASUS MG279Q 27" uses AMD's FreeSync, 144Hz, 4ms response time, costs $820.00:

      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ASUS-MG279Q-27-WQHD-FreeSync-144H…

    • +1

I would maybe consider something like the Acer XG27HU for a fair bit cheaper (~$520). Which is 27 inch, 144Hz, 2K, Freesync. Just isn't IPS. But i'm sure you'll find some that are. It seems Freesync monitors tend to sell for a bit cheaper than g-sync monitors.

      http://www.msy.com.au/nsw/ultimo/peripherals/15453-b-acer-ip…

      • This is an excellent monitor for the price. I've had mine for about 6 months and loving it!

    • freesync is cheaper in general look at msy you can get some great ones (check through futu ebay store they may have some good cheap ones :)

  • sigh I've been looking for a 1080p 144Hz monitor to go with my GTX 1070 that's about to arrive. Bought this instead…

  • I wonder what the magical hertz number is where people cannot tell the difference anymore. Is it below 144hz or above it? Are people going to look down on 144hz as a poor option in the future, where gamers are on 240hz or higher?

I like the idea of one of these monitors, I haven't even played on one yet.

    • +4

      30hz - peasant experience
      60hz - good experiece
80hz - pretty damn good and you'd need to concentrate really hard to notice anything more at around this point.
120hz - Are you Superman? Perhaps with Super vision, you might think a 144hz monitor is really kickass at this point.

      • This is wrong.

up to around 80hz its ridiculously easy to see the difference in small 10-20hz increments

past 80hz you can notice them in 30-40hz increments.

Either way its still very noticable up to at least 100-110hz.

      • 120 Hz is the maximal limit
If you prefer 144 Hz , you're either not enjoying the game or you're OCD type of man who distracted with small trivial things

  • +1

i got this and the previous model (won it ) great monitors highly recommend tbh and yes 144hz does have a difference .

THAT BEING said u can get the previous model cheaper some places differences arent that much doesnt have hdmi and onlyh as 2 usb ports on it

if u wanna save more cash get that model , if these matter get this one

NOTE GYSNC ONLY WORKS THROUGH THE DISPLAY PORT - limitation of the technology :) really recommend this :)

    issue now is i got these plus 2 60hz 1440p monitors :(

  • Can't decide between this and the XB270, which looks far less "flashy".

    • Bezels alone make it an easy win for the XB271HU for me.

    • I wanted to go cheap as well but I figured it's worth paying the extra 80 for a better stand. Plus the other extras made it easy.
