Constantly Wanting a Portable Computer Solution

Dear OzB Community,

Ever since I was in high school (graduated in 2012) I've been wanting a portable computer solution and thus have gone through several different phases by buying and re-selling via Gumtree.

I've purchased and sold MacBook Pro's and Airs at least 3 times and have also tried the Surface Pro 3. However, after the initial glamour I become disheartened by it and eventually stop using it except on the rare occasion.

It should be important to note that I built a gaming rig earlier with the specs:

  • Dual boot Hackintosh
  • 3 SSD's, 1 HDD
  • i7 6700k
  • h100 CPU water cooler
  • gtx 770 (salvaged from prior build).

For my rig to be my 'dream', all I would need is to buy the GTX 1080 which is what I intend on doing soon. But I'm constantly wanting this laptop solution that I don't need or will use after a few months. Why do I constantly feel this compulsion to buy a laptop which is definitely something I don't need? I've nearly finished my degree as well and I really do mean that I have no purpose for a laptop.

Though if I could go back in time, I have chosen to go with the Razer Stealth blade and the CORE.

TL;dr;
Constantly feeling the want for a portable computer solution that I really don't need. Please help in identifying my quirky desire for it and annihilate it!

  • I'm in the same boat.

The Razer Stealth Blade is a great Ultrabook.
The Razer Core is a great external dedicated gpu block.
…But together great gaming pc they make not.

And the problem seems to be three things in particular:
    1) The CPU is a dualcore-U type of processor. The Hyperthreading helps a bit, but most games still demand more cores and not held back by the U-specifications.

    2) The 128GB SSD isn't large enough to store many modern games. There's higher storage, but pricey. And I'm not sure if you can upgrade the PCIE SSD yourself.
    Someone please Google it.

    3) The screen is quite small, and the keyboard a little bit mushy, and a gaming mouse definitely needed.
Sure I accept the mouse. Maybe even the keyboard. But that display will not do.
So that means plugging a DP/HDMI from the external GPU to a monitor… which means the laptop's screen takes up your desk space and gets in the way.
Or if you plug it to a TV, it means the UI will be bad from the distance, and that you need a loong cable from the GPU to the TV.

So it's an imperfect solution, but one many people want…so how can it be improved, easy here's how:
    1) Razer should've opted for a quadcore i5 (6600T, 644HQ, 6820HK, 6700T).
Then made it turn off 2 cores and throttle down while in use as a laptop. And have decent fans and heat pipes when power mode kicks in.
Hell, there's even a tablet like such:
    http://www.pcworld.com/article/2988663/tablet-pc/hands-on-wi…

    2) Okay, seems like you can upgrade the SSD and RAM.
So buying the base version with the QHD screen, 8GB RAM, and 128GB SSD is best play.
Then upgrade the RAM to 16GB (future-proofing), the M.2 to 1TB (for more game storage).
Best to use another screen such as a desktop monitor (1440p, or 21:9, or 144Hz) or a TV (couch gaming) or a VR headset (Valve Vive).

    3) Since a desktop monitor is a great option to connect to, you want to make two changes.
Firstly to make the laptop a bit thicker like a MBP, and give it a deeper/tougher/better keyboard.
Secondly allow the laptop to fold its screen all the way to its back, like HP x360/Lenovo Yoga.
That way the screen can get out of the way when a monitor is hooked up. This also allows it double as a tablet.

For me? My current solution is using a regular laptop and a PS4. I now find most of my time used up for work, chores, and other activities.
Not that the PS4 is bad or anything, its just collecting dust. So getting Steam, the Razer Core, and the Stealth Blade just isn't tempting.
But if a solution like the one above becomes available, I would be very tempted.

    • The idea for me would be to connect it to my 144hz monitor and keyboard mice and take it out with me on the go.

But yes, dual core and extremely pricey storage options. :(

      • Yep.
Wait, so you dont want to be able to use the laptops keyboard for gaming?

        I would.
So the only expense would be the monitor, mouse, and GPU.

(I cant exaggerate the importance of a good quality keyboard)

        • Ideally hook up a gaming mice, keyboard, monitor and headsets to the core or something of the like :)

  • You just want options as do i. Honestly if you have a set desktop then yeah a portable is not really needed. But if you are like me and like comfort and are lazy then a portable solution makes sense especially if you are still in uni. Imho tablets work best for really on the move situations like maybe the train but a laptop is a good all rounder i.e. Bed uni train family houses parties etc

To each their own and well i guess just adjust to your needs because technology pretty much changes now every 9 months or so thats a baby.

Btw how much were you able to get a surface pro 3 or razer stealth blade?

I am trying to gumtree myself a tablet now in the nvidia shield / nexus 9 / maybe samsung galaxy tab s2 range. This p7510 is starting to slow down and cant keep up. I cant even run the gumtree app too long before it crashes.

Tl;dr trust your inner instinct always and if you cant trust someone elses

    • I actually bought the surface pro 3 outright during last years EOFY Sale. Cant remember how much but it was 13% of MSRP at Harvey's. Which jb hi fi did not want to match lol

  • If it's really a problem for you 'why' you want what you don't really need then my advice is to go still inside and let the answer come, it will. But in my experience the way to get rid of 'wanting' is to get what you want. And if that becomes a habit then habits can be broken, by not thinking about the object and/or some form of distraction.

Best thing is though, not to make a problem of it by getting emotional about it or trying to 'force' a solution. Is it really such a big deal?

Self mastery is a lifetime's work.

    • I guess it's a deal because logically speaking it's really useless or not of much use to me. But I emotionally? Want it a lot? And that contradiction is what is eating me up and killing me :(

      • Stop running the two together (wanting, not wanting) and just do what you do when you do it, no problem. If you have to buy one buy it, and if you then have to sell it, sell it. No problem …

  • You haven't really specified what you want to do with the portable solution. And also why you've stopped using the ones that you've tried (macbook pro, surface pro etc.) If it's portable gaming then sounds like you've got high standards and nothing will ever live up to a dedicated gaming rig.

And maybe it's just one of those things that doesn't suit your lifestyle / use profile.

For the longest time my dream was always to have a tablet - one device that I could bring everywhere that's more useful than my mobile. But after getting an iPad mini, I've found that at work I use my laptop, and at home it's just more convenient to whip out my mobile. So there's really no need for me to have a tablet and it's now the kids entertainment device.

Is it just a case of your mind desiring something you don't actually need?

    • I recently bought a 2 in one, ASUS, Windows 10, core M, 4GB. Then I managed to Install Android 5.1 as dual boot.
Antutu with core M results in 150K points. Games are blazing fast, high res. Keyboard connects with both OS. All is good.
But I have this urge to buy a lower performance, 2 in 1, fro china, with the only difference in having 3G built in and being smaller ( 10' instead of 12')
      Why ?
      I have no clue !

    • Yes. Exactly. My mind desiring something I don't need.
As a side note, the iPad is great as a mobile device. That's one thing I loved and never looked back on.

  • +2

Because you want people to see you using a computer because of your impression that it's a status symbol.

    • Hmm. That's an interesting thought!
      +1

  • Maybe because you want the laptops to be what they are not, desktops? Just a suggestion. When I had a laptop as my only option, I kinda always wanted something better. After getting a desktop and settling on the idea that laptops just need to be for light uses, I kinda ended up not wanting anything new.

    • I think ultimately I'm waiting for the razor stealth blade with quad core. :(

      • After that, wouldn't you end up wanting something that can do more, so on and so forth?

        • Only the graphics performance so I would buy a new graphics card??

        • @bich.light: The thing I was trying to imply was, there is always going to be something better (eventually at least), and by the looks of it, you want something that's the best and end up wanting more. Wouldn't you end up in a spiral where you get something that's good, end up wanting more and get something that's better? Hence my comment, so on and so forth.

          Just my opinion, of course.

        • @Oversimplified:

While that's true, I was content with my 4th gen i7. But upgraded due to lack of maintenance and the PC dying. I buy the best to 'future proof'. But yes I do know what you mean

  • +1

I used to have a $2000 gaming laptop, after I built my custom desktop though I realized that gaming on a desktop is simply far more comfortable to game on and you're able to get far superior performance for the price.

Now I find myself lusting for a high-end business-grade ultrabook that fits nicely in a small backpack… maybe a Dell Latitude 7000 series, maybe even the super-thin HP Spectre, maybe a Surface Book. Not sure why I need it, since I don't use a laptop for work and I'm no longer in uni, haha.

    • Ha, ha … I think it's called 'wanting'.

    • More or less same boat aha. Maybe me at the end of this year :(

  • I can see where you're going for and I do see it. Thing is are you like me who tends to build PCs just because you can?

I have a gaming PC for Windows 10 and right now it just runs Forza Apex.

I personally do not see a need to go smaller than micro atx. I dont care too much about itx and micro atx means parts are just cheaper.

    My gaming Win10 pc is just a 16Gb Xeon 3.3ghz w/ 240gb ssd and i hope to put a rx470/480 in it.

My 'other' pc is an x79 with the Xeon 2670. I havent found a use for it yet…

But I game on a 40" LCD TV so no need for real portability. I dont want to game unless I'm at home and at a desk so…
