SSD Upgrade for laptop Using HDD Caddy + Windows Retail key question

Hi All

Not just another ssd upgrade question (hopefully)

  1. My laptop is MSI GE 620 dx (i7 model ). When I checked with Crystal disk software for HDD it is showing up as transfer mode Sata /300. So it is SATA drive? I planning to keep the HDD and use hdd caddy. So my question is should i replace in place of HDD with SSD and use HDD in the dvd drive place or keep ssd in DVD drive. (Any performance issues) & BIOS changes i need to take care of. I see similar query for macbook but same logic applies here ?

  2. Being Sata /300 is it worth to go for sata 2 or sata 3 for reliability issue.I assume they are backward compatible. I see deals around sata 3 mostly but i dont think it will give benefit as speed is limited. Is it correct?I'm planning to upgrade with 240 gb for OS (win 8.1) and games like Call of duty & steam games,MS Office.

  3. I have retail win 8.1 key planning to do clean install and while upgrading should i follow.

Remove the Key from HDD, Will it give 30 days trial period before I Install Win 8.1 (Clean)into SSD?? Post installation take a image backup.

Thanks guys

  • Hi,

SSD in laptop is great, faster, quiter, less battery drain.
Suggest 512GB SSD if you can afford it.
Easiest is ti use driveclone. does all the magic including UEFI.

    Cheers

  • I did a similar thing 3 years ago. I ended up putting the SSD where the original HDD was and the HDD where the optical drive was.

I used paragon partition manager to move files from the HDD to the SSD as I understand they are not like for like drives.

  • Thanks.

I'm thinking of doing easy way if i use ssd into hdd caddy so no need to touch the hdd slot. Will it impacts any performance.

I'm thiking of doing clean install first and then a image copy for future reinstall. Before I install into new disk should i have to remove from old one right? And should i go for sata 2 or sata 3?
