What's The Most Delicious Meal You Can Make That Doesn't Require Cooking Using Cheap Supermarket Items?

I hate preparing lunch the night before and I'm too tight to spend money buying hot meals.

Please share your most frugal no-cooking recipe so that I can just go to supermarket and get my lunch sorted.

I have to recommend Gif Recipes.

We all see them on Facebook and a lot of them are really simple. Perfect for impressing the inlaws ;)

Approx $1.10 for one serve of this:

Coles 90g tuna varieties ~80c each
Coles two minute noodles 5 pack $1.40

Cover noodles with boiled water in a bowl then a small dish on top. Drain after 5 minutes.
    Tuna onto the noodles.
    Microwave on high 30 sec.

Practically no cooking and better for you than a $6 meal deal.

    • Bread and dips. (I think the heavier type loaf, e.g. woolworths seeds/grains, are better for this). Any dips found at the supermarket, although I find the chunky dips, and dips with nuts, much more delicious.

    • Bread, and small canned tuna.

    • Bread, sliced cheese. You can also add peanut butter, jam etc

    • Cook more for your main meal the night before, so that there is extra for tomorrow's lunch. Might need to microwave.

6 rolls $2 (place in freezer and defrost each morning in microwave)
    Shaved deli ham 200g $4
Block tasty cheese 1kg $7.50 (will last 2 weeks depending how thick slice it)
Bag of spinach 160g $3 (use paper towel to remove excess moisture and place in lock and lock container - can last 2 to 3 weeks without going bad)
    Praise mayonnaise $3.50 ish

Salad rolls each day for lunch. Prices are Woolworths or Coles. Probably works out to be $2.50 a day and it's healthy

    • Agree, this is pretty good!

This is my staple lunch most days. I prefer wholemeal bread or rolls and I try to mix it up a bit by using salami instead of ham or adding pickles or a different sauce. I don't do tomato or beetroot (love them both) because they make the bread soggy even after patting with paper towel

Besides, beetroot is not a good idea, best to avoid for packed lunch! Could accidentally stain the clothes!

Freezing bread causes it to go stale.

      • +1

Wrong. Freeze it when you get it fresh, do not open the bag. When it comes out of the fridge it will be just as fresh. Air makes Bread go stake

    Packet mi goreng

  • Tinned spaghetti or tinned soup. Just heat in microwave.

  • If rice is your thing, and you're super, super lazy, microwave rice packets ($1.40) can replace bread for the canned tuna and bread lunch. Spice it up with half a cucumber, a carrot and an apple. Snack on a half price nut bar, or trail mix. A coffee or a tea will complete your lunch.

I was thinking, shop at an organic place if you want expensive produce. Add some truffles, or just go with sea food

  • tuna & rice

  • 4 pack chicken breasts ~ 1.2-1.4kg worth
    2 broccoli
    3 sweet potatoes

Dice sweet potatoes and cover in olive oil, salt, pepper, herbs + whatever else you want. Whack in oven on high heat to cook.

    Cut broccoli up and steam

Cut each chicken breast into 4 pieces and marinate - I use: honey, soy, ginger and garlic.
Pan fry or use skillet pan to grill.

Portion out into 5 or 6 containers - should work out ~$3 (or less) per portion depending on where you get ingredients from.

I generally aim for (per portion):
    - 130-150g chicken
    - 80-100g sweet potato
    - fill rest of container with broccoli

Sweet potatoes can be swapped for brown rice - broccoli can be swapped for any veggie.
