400K Qantas FF Points - What to Do?

Hi, I've got about 400k of Qantas point accumulated till date.
Wondering if i should sell them or use for future flight upgrades ((highly unlikely) or gift cards? Selling is the preferred option but conscious that Qantas may audit the transfer and suspend both the accounts (buyer's and sellers). Thoughts?

Why don't you book a holiday…? Business class is always the best way to go, and you've got plenty for a business class flight overseas

Use them. 2x round the world tickets in Economy, or wait for another 20k points and have one first class ticket round the world.

Yeah, this. A first class round-the-world ticket is like winning the lottery for 99.9999+% of people. People go on game shows and spend their lives buying lotto tickets for these. Some murder. This is the "happiness" fantasy.

Or just sell it for cash, an easy $3,000.

Has anyone ever started a thread titled "million bucks - what to do?" in the OzBargain forums?

Sell it. Do not transfer. You can book on behalf of buyers.

Correction: You can book on behalf of eligible family members.

Sell it. Buyer takes the risk and you have cash in hand
worst that can happen to you is Qantas closes your account but you lose no points as they are sold already

you can always open up a new qantas account..

A OneWorld Classic Award (the 'round the world' option) is definitely the way to go! Currently you have enough points for 2 x economy fares, 1 x business fare, or as someone has mentioned above, collect 20,000 extra points for a go at first.

I recently completed a Business OWC award (2 x adults and an infant for 520k points total, and less than $500 taxes each). I am publishing a series of posts on my blog on how to book these awards with Qantas points and minimal taxes / fees (to assist people who'd rather not trawl through 300 + pages of the Australian Frequent Flyer forum post).

If you're interested, my first post covers off the key FAQs here: https://thechampagnemile.com/2016/07/09/around-the-world-in-…

Otherwise, depending on your departure city, you could consider flying Qantas or Emirates first class return to Europe (beware the high taxes/fees, though!), or burning through 2-3 business return trips to Asia (suggest redeeming for Cathay Pacific flights, as these come with only minimal taxes and a great business product - i.e. SYD - HKG is less than $80 taxes/fees each way).

    • This is incredible!!! Although i didnt have any intention in doing ATW as we have 2 kids under 4 but your experience and advice has certainly made me consider this option. Any tips in bookings this airfares through rewards?? And also, could you share some practial planning and timings required for this kind of trip with young kids? And lastly, whats the appropriate duration for this kind of trips - 4 to 6 weeks??

      Thanking you!

Hi V2, the second part of my post on the award has now gone live, it can be found here: https://thechampagnemile.com/2016/07/24/around-the-world-in-…

Hopefully this answers many of your queries :) In terms of travelling with small children, personally, I find that travelling on overnight flights works the best, and I wouldn't bother with a bassinette for any child over 9 months (they are probably just going to climb out!). We find the use of an iPad with Peppa Pig is invaluable, and access to lounges between flights is a godsend (the Qantas lounge in Hong Kong has an excellent family area).

4-6 weeks is plenty. We like to avoid large metropolitan cities and do things like hire a nice villa for a week (so more a focus on travelling to markets and half day trips, cooking nice meals in and sitting on terraces with a glass of wine, rather than cosmopolitan city activities, which you are often restricted from experiencing with little ones).

Will be publishing a couple of reviews on long haul flights with a toddler in the next few weeks.

All the best planning your travels!

  • Keep in mind the cash component after using points especially with Qantas.
For 560K points 2 pax go around the world in J (Bus. Class)
