I am a tech savvy and always wanted to turn my house into a smart house.

Also if you already have this at your place, please share your experience.

Australians are so backwards and technology illiterate, so you'll most likely end up with a majority 'No' vote.

I have a Samsung electronic lock for my backdoor. My home in South Korea has one too and it's completely safe. It also has a key insert if you want to revert back to the old fashioned key in a lock. That country has opened my eyes having worked there for a number of years.

I have something similar to this in both houses.

'Australians are so backwards and technology illiterate' Really? Compared to who? Glad to have you in our great country as you obviously respect us and the place in which you live. Feel free to go back to South Korea if that is so fantastic.

      • I'm Aussie. The white, beer drinking kind.

        The truth hurts.

I didn't say you weren't. I asked who you are comparing us to in your broad sweeping comment. Looking at the following Top Ten list, Australia is ranked 9th in the world for High Tech countries - http://www.thetoptens.com/high-tech-countries/. Sure, South Korea is ranked higher but #9 is pretty damn good. If you have any fact at all to back up your statement then now is the time to let us know.

          @dogboy:
I am currently in Greece. You know, this poor, small country affected by deep, ongoing economical issues. I have a chance to compare building practices, materials used, etc, of family houses. I do not want to write pages and pages here, there are many materials on the net for curious. No official ranking, but quality of new houses is shockingly different. Guess which way "shockingly" goes. People in some countries are happy to accept poor quality as normal - so this is what they are getting. Oi, oi, oi.

Backwards? Really? Look at the speed of our Internet! It is one of the fastest in the world! And we just voted in government which is going to improve it even more! …just a minute… oh, sorry, I am loosing touch with reality again.

    • But you can't even play Pokemon GO in Korea!

      Also, Active X.

      • It's so cold outside at night, though. This is the only time I get to play.

        • It doesn't even go below 0 most of the times in Australia (compare that to Korean winter, temperature below 0 is fairly common during winter, unless you go south).

Besides, I personally think digital locks in Korea are popular because of its unique market condition. Tech renovation stuff? They can't even keep up with the web standards.

        • @Oversimplified:

It's about 6 degrees where I live in Aus. Still too cold.

I agree, Seoul gets to -15 on the rare occasion.

Smart locks are currently Gen 1. The best unit appears to be an August smart lock which is an add on for an existing lock but it is a little unsightly. If you want a simple smart lock, the Kevo lock works just like your car, you walk up to the door and it detects your phone and opens the door when you touch the lock. But the current Gen 1 has no smart hub intergration. I am personally waiting for the Gen 2 Kevo to come out, but the Gen 1 is awfully tempting at under $200.

What if you are inside with your phone and someone on the outside touches it?

      • It supposed to be pretty secure. It is certainly much better than the hideous Samsung locks.

        • Hi thorton82,

Thanks for all the comments, what do u think is the disadvantage of the Samsung locks?
They look kool, a lot of functions.

August locks aren't so impressive by the look.

        • @parthparmar5655: Mate the Samsung locks look super tacky. The August essentially is an addition to an existing deadbolt, so the mechanism itself can be as secure as you want it. Not only does it have proximity opening, but it is HomeKit enabled, which means you can open and close it with voice commands from your iPhone, and you can access it remotely with an additional $70 box. It's widely regarded as the best smart lock on the market. Simplicity is key, not tacky additions.

Thanks for the comments guys. Need more replies for the pros and cons of the Samsung shs-p920 please. Building with metricon and they do provide the basic Samsung smart lock for $1000 but trying to buy one off eBay for $400 and get it installed from a local tradie.

what does a smart lock do that you really need one? (not a list of features but what you actually need it to do).
I can see how its clever to use one but I don't see how our family would ever need one.

    • To stop yourself from getting locked out when you forget the keys would be number one reason for me to get one.

      • is that it. I am 50 and have locked the keys in once in my life.

For me it would be so I don't have to take a key, not because I forget them. Used to be you'd carry a wallet and keys. now wallet phone and keys so dropping one would be good.

I know a girl who does it several times a week. Even twice in a day, one day we were hanging out. She has a system of breaking in the back window. Not everyone knows their arse from a while in the ground.

        • @phoenixx:
          Hi pheonixx,

          Can you please elaborate?

  • Any more suggestion/experience guys?

  • spend the money on some better gadget. It isnt really needed except to say cool look at this.

I'm getting one for my new house so I don't have to take keys to the beach. Another thing I'm getting is a garage door opener that works on an app. No more remotes needed. I can open it remotely, or give a one time access code to cleaners etc and it times how long they are there , who opens it and when.

    • Thanks for the input maximum,

Main reason for getting this lock is staying up-to-date with the technology.

Also, can you provide me some more details about the garage door opener? Brand/model etc?
Also intruders have started buying universal remote for the garage doors, they try it to few houses if it opens up they will get in and steal stuffs. So few people have started buying another remote controlled power socket which they turn off after their garage use. So pretty much another layer of security.

Please provide further suggestion/input other people.

  • Does anyone have a feedback for these Samsung locks warranty claim or any other electronic items from eBay off Korea?
