We are an extended family of 7 adults and 1 child travelling to Perth from other cities for a family wedding in mid December. We got cheap flights and have decided to stay longer over Christmas up to and including New Year's. Accommodation in Perth during the mining boom has always been more expensive than Sydney. Looking for any ideas and/or recent experience of booking affordable accommodation in Perth for our extended family to stay together.

What area in Perth? The city is pretty sprawled, so knowing where you want to base yourselves, or where the wedding is, will help with ideas.
Also, I assume you're hiring a car/s?
And define 'affordable'. What's the ideal daily rate?

The wedding is going to be in central Perth and ideally would prefer to be based on the northern side of Perth.
