China Claiming South China Sea

well it's not a bargain related or travel related but i'm very keen to hear people's views on this. So China is claiming the south china sea either by claiming those little islands on the SE Sea or building their own islands and putting a navy base on it. According to China, if they have a naval base (even if it's not operational) they are entitle to the waters around it.

All these actions to secure the minerals and oil in the water is annoying neighboring countries in South East Asia.
Is China allowed to do such actions? Is this bullying?

  • Well, this is nothing new. They have been claiming land which do not belong to them- for instance, Taiwan, Tibet, Arunachal Pradesh(Indian state). Now they have extended their claims to water bodies. Crazy bunch I'd say

    • There are prolonged disputes & massive amount of researches on whether or not these places belong to China. Simple assertion like this just doesn't work.

      • Well, I live in India and have been to places that share the border with China and have talked to people over there. So it isn't just another regular comment

        • Not feeling like involving myself into an argument that leads to nowhere, territorial disputes are far more complex than what people generally believe. After all it's the jungle law that rules us all.

        • @jkcat: I am not arguing at all. Well at least I can speak for myself that China cannot claim a state that belongs to another country. It is plain bullsh*t.

  • Absolutely illegal. The recent arbitration that sided with The Philippines means nothing if China doesn't accept the verdict. They're flexing their muscle and unfortunately, China is ripped.

  • One of my mates thought the territorial dispute was over fish; bless his little cotton socks. As for China's position … they have the capacity to be the regional enforcer and have more right than America does. I'll just be Switzerland for the time being.

  • They have the power now so they are doing it. In a hundred years time, another country will be in China's position now and they will do it too. It's human nature.

Let china do whatever they want. After all, they are worlds economic engine. Money talks, no one wants to upset the chinese now do they.

    • If SEA were to impose economic sanctions on China, they are going to have a bad time.

      • What kind of sanctions could you impose? In this day and age I think most countries would struggle big time if they banned Chinese imports.

And Australia's resources sector relies very heavily on exporting to China.

        • Lets say for example Japan imposes economic sanctions on China. Japan is 20% of China's export market and Japan is 19% of Chinese exports. If you take into account their GDP's China stands to lose $495b and Japan will lose $174b. Combined with all the other SEA nations China will be a huge loser here.

It's interesting to note that around 70% of the huge economic gains made recently in China is only held by about 1% of the people and most of that money is being sent overseas.

Those man made islands will not last long. They are made in China.

    • You're probably joking. I think? But there are people who have this ignorant view. It's interesting that the Chinese built a dam so big, it has slowed the rotation of the Earth. Big projects is what they do well.

So you say the INDIAN Ocean is the property of India as well???

    • And is New South Wales Welsh?

      and New Zealand Dutch?

    1. According to the UN ruling a few days ago China is doing the wrong thing, BUT the UN ruling is not enforceable.
    2. Yes China is bullying, but they have the bombs so they can. And this is ok, according to my Chinese flatmate who doesn't wash his hands after using the toilet (plus the 1000 other delinquent behaviours) the Chinese are the master race !
    3. Now that mining is slowing down Australia should enter in cold war arms race with China, then I can sell my Telstra shares and invest in Defence Manufacturing.
  • China is a bully. their communist mentality will not go away. now they are saying international court judges were bribed. Ridiculous

  • So, it sounds like no countries in Asia will dare to stand up to China's action despite knowing it's wrong because it will far worse for their economic to oppose. Better to accept the bullying. And doesn't matter which International body sets what ruling, China doesn't have to obey and follow. IMO not much difference being a terror to other countries except there's no bloodshed(yet).
