Hi guys. Recently I purchased a Xiaomi Redmi 3 Pro from AliExpress and am having the worst time with the UI. It seems like a worse version of IOS which for me defeats the purpose of going with Android. Now the actual phone itself, hardware wise, seems great for the price and I want to be able to use it so here's the main point of this post.
Has anyone had any experience with installing something like Cyanogenmod on one of these phones. I've been searching google since yesterday morning and what I can see is that Xiaomi have some kind of lock on the bootloader which you need to apply for to get unlocked I suppose. I haven't really gone into this thing before, at least with phones, and I have no idea what to do. I just need a step by step guide as to what to do.
Thanks to anyone who can point me in the right direction otherwise I'm going to try returning the phone which seems like a nightmare in itself.
I bought the same phone and it came without the official MIUI rom. Took me about 4 hours to figure out, but I used instructions in an official MIUI thread and a Youtube video about how to install the official rom on a Redmi Note 3 with a locked bootloader. Between the two I somehow figured it out.
I think these are links that helped me:

But I don't know about cyanogen. I find the MIUI is okay, just took a little getting used to. Maybe just get a launcher like Nova Launcher?
