Domestic Travel Insurance for Going to The Snow

I've learned the hard way that traveling to the snow should be accompanied with insurance.

Can I purchase any travel insurance to go up to Victorian mountains or are there specific features I need to look for?
Any recommendations?

If anyone else is considering going to the snow, make sure you have that and Ambulance Victoria cover!

  • Have you got a Commonwealth Gold/Plat card? I think you can insure yourself for your holiday with that cover.

    • Thanks for the suggestion, but "Please note that we will not pay for medical or hospital costs incurred in Australia".

      • I don't think any domestic travel insurance covers medical costs.

        • Does it cover loss of income due to injury?

    • Pretty sure that is international cover only.

  • Following! I'm going to thredbo on the weekend (Albeit, for one night). But curious to see how this folds out. Good luck :)

  • if the insurancw is primarily for property check your home and content policy, some of them allow for items lost during travel…

  • I'll have a look around at policies, was hoping someone might have had experience.
    Best case medical and property!

If you are in a last minute pinch then you might be able to buy insurance at the resort. I think Perisher has a counter where you can buy insurance:

I have my own private health insurance. Your home and contents insurance might already cover your snowboard/ski. Comprehensive car insurance covers the drive up to the resort + hail damage. Compulsory Third Party covers the passengers.

For me, the biggest risks are the ones in my control. Pick a resort where everyone is your skill level or slower. Eat/sleep/hydrate. Don't push yourself on that last run.

  • Medicare?
    Ambulance Cover?
What else do you need insurance for?

    • Travel, cancelled tickets, outpatient MRI, specialist doctors, equipment, etc. Need I carry on with examples?

Trying to be proactive not reactive here…

All those, plus you may get stuck up the mountain if the road is closed and need emergency accom/ alternate flights.

      • Travel - your car insurance policy? MRI, doctors - and other medical do you have private health insurance already? Otherwise Medicare!

Apart from the premium they'll slog you an excess and have a bunch of exclusions. Such as your equipment will be excluded if unattended - which you will likely do as most skiers/boarders leave gear outside unattended when taking a break.

Having ambulance cover would be the big one - to get you to hospital

Allianz have a cover. But it's a bit expensive and possibly over covered (ie 6k rental excess when 4k will do most). Most resorts have their own tweaked cover (under written by Allianz). My parents just booked using TID, selecting the snow tick a box option. There is a 10% off code on ozbargain aswell. Or just call and say you have misplaced the code and they will give it to you. Goodluck.
