HP Microserver G1610T or a 2nd NAS, Choices Choices

Hi,

Got cheap 4*2TB Enterrpise WD drives.
Now what to do with them.
Already got a primary NAS (Synology DS214) for streaming, surveillance download samples.
Got some USB and Raspberry backup.

But would like to make use of those shiny disks in a meaningful way.
Seems a reasonable 4 Bay NAS is between $300-$400.
A HP Microserver G1610T can be had for $310 shipped (ShoppingExpress).

What would I use it for? Secondary versioned backup (Cryptolocker insurance), maybe as primary media share…

I do like my Synology, but also wouldn't mind exploring the world of Microservers.
Can handle Linux, but prefer some "simple" setup and not hours of commandline hacking.

Any thoughts?

  • Put them in RAID 10 for 4TB of near fail proof storage … think of the pr0nssibilities. Microserver over NAS but given you have asked perhaps stick with the NAS as it will be less of a headache for you.

  • +1

Since you like Synology, you might like XPenology. Downside is you can only run DSM 5.2, not DSM 6. I run it on my HP N54L microserver with Surveillance Station, Download Station, Sickrage, Plex and more.

    • Sounds like a great idea.
I am looking now at HP ProLiant ML10 v2 Server G3240 4GB RAM, $300 at shopping express.
More RAM and easily expanded (non ECC).

  • Try FreeNAS on a microserver. You won't look back.
