Can you take out your own policy on a rental car?

Just did an online quote with AAMI for a full comp policy on a rental car. They use to ask if you are the owner, but it never was asked. I then read the pds. Only section was you can't hire out the car. So if I'm using it privately and list the car hire company as a shared policy holder, am I covered?

    No.

  • You can get travel insurance that covers the exorbitant insurance excess on a rental, to reduce the cost of the overall hire…if that's what you mean?

    • I don't think it is, I believe OP just looked up regular comprehensive car insurance, for the hire car (ie a car he doesn't own…)

  • Spaceback is correct. I have an Anz Black. But looking to hire an Avis car to the snow. I did the entire booking online without being asked / given an option to add snow cover. But when reading the pds it says you may not drive on snow. Does that mean off road over snow? If I crash on a road that has no snow on it, yet all around it,I see no issue.

So I looked at other options. Ie my own entire policy.

Avis/ budget etc will add snow cover for $35 a day for the week. What a rip.

  • you can, I do this all the time as the rental companies quotes exorbitant prices for insurance, I normally use https://tripcover.com.au/ or http://www.rentalcover.com/. If you use a site like vroomvroom or rentalcars.com, they provide you the option of buying insurance from them as well and I believe those ones are provided by these two companies or a customized allianz policy. They give you a better rate that is almost similar to what is quote by the websites I suggested.

    • Thanks, but these are both excess cover insurance. I'm talking a literal car comprehensive policy.

I went through an online quote with Nrma and AAMI and at no stage did they ask if I own the car. Just simply who is driving and rego plate.

Traditionally the do you own the vehicle was question number 1.

  • I have bought a yearly policy through https://www.worldwideinsure.com before. But, IIRC there is a line in their policy saying they won't cover you for driving if you violate the terms of the rental. If there is a rental that says you can't drive on snow then you may be OOL.

  • If I didn't see the snow part on ozbargain I would not have known it existed. Was never mentioned in the booking and isn't an option in the insurance extras.
Avis acknowledge it's missing and said they will hit you up for it when you arrive to pick up the car!

So I searched the t&cs and it only mentions no off road driving in Cape trib and over snow. So if I stick to the main road and not a snow track I'm covered. Probably… But would come down to the discretion of a court as I'm sure Avis would have no problem charging if went wrong if snow was present.

I guess if it hails or similar in a metro location you are equally up the snake.
