Windows 7 Family Pack -> Free Windows 10?

Just wondering if anybody has upgraded a Windows 7 family pack (Upgrade media), which is basically a 3 pack windows 7 home upgrade version containing 1 licence key that can be installed on up to 3 computers to windows 10 via the free upgrade version. If so what was the procedure you used to upgrade all computers?

Im finding conflicting information and not sure the exact procedure to use?

  • I assume MS helpdesk is no help?

I would try burning a disc from the ISO file and use in all three. I did a single license upgrade this last week using that method (so if I have to reinstall I may save on download time etc).

It picked up the already installed key (from win 8.1), perhaps it would do the same on your three.

    • Single licence upgrades are easy to do its just confusing when it comes to a 3 user licence using the same key for all three installs. If it convertas the existing licence to windows 10 single user or 3 user upgrade or or retail licence that can still be used on up to 3 pcs to clean install after the upgrade to Windows 10.

    • what era are you living in? op shouldnt burn a disk, he should use a usb instead, there are many softwares to make bootable usbs such as rofus

      • a disk is 10c

  • It worked fine on my computers. Just have Win 7 installed and then run the Win 10 setup from dvd or usb. Once done the first time it will tie the Win 10 license to yout motherboard.

    • +1

The Family Pack was a retail Windows upgrade so not officially tied to the motherboard. In a sense it can be transferred to a new pc if removed from the old computer or reinstalled on the same pc if ever its components are upgraded such as motherboard, cpu etc.

As for embedded keys in bios. I thought it was only the OEM editions of Windows that did this. Not the retail versions.

      • Yes you are right but as soon as you upgrade an install to Win 10 it ties it to your motherboard, it can no longer be transferred to the another pc like it could previously. I don't believe that they embed the key in the bios but they obviously have someway of doing this.

  • It worked fine for me as a WIN 7 > WIN 10 Upgrade….. However I'm not using it on 3 PC's only one.

  • Aren't all the three computers having the pop up to say Upgrade To Win 10? what if you check Updates, does it give the option there?

or have you not installed the win 7 on 3 pcs yet.

    • Have it installed on 2 of 3 computers. These computers all have the latest Windows 7 updates + SP1 installed and are showing the Get Windows 10 popup in the system tray. Haven't upgraded any of them yet.

Also would I need to install all 3 to get 3 updated to 10 or will not installing 1 mean it will still remain usable as a windows 7 install?

      • the third one will be win 7 as that's what you will install. And if you leave it after july 29 you wont get win 10 free.

go to Paul Thorotts site and he will have the info, or you may be able to even ask him.
