Printer that uses ONLY Black ink cartridges

I have an epson XP-400 series and it is an ok printer BUT I recently replaced a black ink cartridge and about a week later its demanding I replace the Cyan cartridge as it uses cyan and magenta even when printing in black/greyscale. This apparently canoot be changed.

I want to avoid this issue in my next printer so does anyone know any printer that only have black cartridges?

If I can get a few examples I will keep an eye out for those printers on special.

EDIT: OK so I will get a laser printer. Thanks for the responses.

Buy a Laser printer.. They're super cheap and print for ages! No more dried ink cartridges!

Do you work for ACA or something?

"Whether these particles are harmful is the subject of ongoing research…" This the quote from the first result returned which is an ABC webpage.

Why not complete that research and have it peer-reviewed before trying to create alarm. I mean everyday I hear of news reports of everyday things the could cause cancer.

Quote from second link to Safe Work Australia webpage.

"Each of the assessments indicates the risk of direct toxicity and health effects from exposure to laser printer emissions is negligible; however, people responsive to unusual or unexpected odour may detect/react to the presence of emissions."

If you look hard enough, you can find anything being linked to cancer: https://www.google.com.au/search?q=hot+potato+cancer

The second result in this Google search is an expert review commissioned by Safe Work Australia which does risk assessments and concludes that:

These screening risk assessments are conservative in order to take account of uncertainty in the exposure, the nature of the emissions, and the identity/health effects of emission components. Each of the analyses indicates the risk of direct toxicity and health effects is negligible; however people who are responsive to unusual or unexpected odour may detect/react to the presence of printer emissions.

So the only evidence of toxicity is a negligable risk, even in with the most generous estimates of exposure. And then they're basically just speculating that some people may notice an odour and have a reaction?

I take this to mean even science can't prove it. If it was proved then they would've done something about it.

Better buy a Laser with Black toner only. Cheaper in the long run.

  • That's is pretty strange. Have you checked that you haven't selected colour in printer options by default? If you have, it means that your printer will use colour cartridges to print ALL documents regardless of whether the document is colour or not.

    • No, inkjets use ink [Doh!] which will dry in the capillary tubes and print heads after a while of non-use, which is why you will notice that ~ once every 24 hours they run a small 'clearing' routine which runs a little ink through the system to keep it working. Although annoying, the manufacturers have done really well keeping this essential flow to an infinitesimal amount - that the printers will not work as mono without the colour tanks is annoying tho, but probably because they would get a vast number of complaints if people were able to take the colour tanks out - and have the entire system crust up and become un-usable.

  • If you must have inkjet, the $28 Canon MP230 lets you choose to use the black cartridge only.

But as others have said a laser printer is cheaper in the long run.

  • In printing preference, under 'Print Options', select 'Black/Grayscale'

  • I picked up a Samsung/Brother Mono laser printer from HN for $17 a few years back and it works great. I get refills on eBay for $25.

Well it seems like a cheap laser printer is the way to go. I hadn't even thought of that. Thanks for all the responses :)
