Upgrade SSD with Limited RAM on Laptop

Guys, i got an old laptop with 2gb ddr2 ram and Vista OS on 5400rpm HDD.

Vista keeps filling the ram to 100% with everything including virtual memory on HDD, ended up data constantly swapping in and out from HDD which results in lagness/jam/hang.

Already tried turning off the superfetch or whatever-fetch, but still the same.

Will upgrading to SSD alone fix the issue? Looking to skip the ram upgrade.

  • Upgrading to Windows 7/10 will help a bit.
RAM is the actual problem though, why skimp on the RAM upgrade? it's easily the best bang for buck!

  • upgrading ram and installing a ssd will give you a very fast machine… And it probably will fix the issue,,, If it doenst, reinstall Vista and/or upgrade to win8/win10/Debian…

Before doing those things I would do do two cold reboots logging into admin on each boot. Also set no swap, reboot, delete all swap files then reset swap…

SSD is great, worth it. RAM is usually easy to replace unless your crappy manufacture solders it on (Apple)

  • Upgrade the operating system to something more recent
Either buy yourself a cheap Windows 7 license or use Linux

You can also try Chrome OS if you want a lightweight os

SSD is also a good upgrade choice but you should buy something half decent
After all, SSD use sata tech which is forward and backward compatible so if you get a new laptop you can continue to use it.

  • I upgraded a slow laptop with max 2Gb RAM to an SSD for big speed improvements as the cache is so much faster, but now the processor is the bottleneck. SSD are so cheap these days it is probably worth a shot if the processor is not incredibly slow. I would also upgrade the RAM if that is an option.

  • 2gb is enough ram to run most basic applications/games/windows
You'd notice more of a speed increase with a SSD, I love the samsungs 840 evo has magician as well for easy configuration.
Once ssd is upgraded install windows 10 for better performance and if it is still slow add a 4gb stick.. should be back up to par.

  • no it wont, upgrade the RAM. but most likely it sounds like you might need to do a restore.

  • It depends on what will be the use of your laptop.

But, first move is to upgrade to Windows 10, you will see a huge difference. Windows Vista is known for loading the RAM for no reasons, and consuming a lot of resources.
Then, is your HDD making weird/whirring noises? If yes, you should change it as even if you upgrade your Windows, it might not last long.
Upgrading to a SSD and Windows 10 will be well enough if you are only doing internet browsing, videos, facebook.
If you need to do more intense programs use (like Photoshop, Lightroom) or gaming, I would recommend to also upgrade the RAM.
2GB of RAM is sufficient to run efficiently W10 and do only basic windows app running.

  • Hi Everyone,

I need some help from the tech savvy folks here.

I have an Asus laptop from 2011, i7, 8GB, SATA 750HDD 5400rpm. I tried to upgrade my HDD to SDD last year and the guy at Centercom told me it is not possible. Because he thinks I needed some kind of adapter (not very helpful was the impression I got). I am a bit confused because some SDD/HDD drives out there seem to have an extra bank of 4-5 gold pins which I am not sure what they are for. I know my old laptop drive does not have those pins.

Can someone enlighten me please. What SDD can I use to upgrade my old laptop, are there specific models or pin configurations (SATA or EXTRA PINS) that I need or adapters?

Thanks for your help in advance.

It is possible. Hard drives all use the same SATA connection… Your laptop might simply have a special spacer that connects the receptacle to the drive

Read the manual if in doubt
There's always a section in the manual that details how the drive is removed. All you have to do reverse the process for installation.

  • Thanks Scrimshaw. Appreciated.

Will give it a go and probably visit another store. Cheers.
