Samsung SH-B083A Blu-Ray Combo Drive $99

280

As title says, not so much a deal if you're after a bluray player as they can be had cheap, but it's the cheapest PC drive i've seen. Pity I paid $140 a few weeks ago. $14 cheaper than cheapest staticice. If it's a poor deal please neg me hardcore

Great comment.. Sounds like a good deal to me. and I'm pretty sure you can't buy a standalone BluRay for less than $150..

  • Hmmm seems like a good price alright but im waiting till the Blu ray burners come down in price. They are still well over the 200 mark, i think.

    • Is it worth it? How much is a Blu-Ray blank?

      • You are the cheapest by 1c in staticice! what's the postage like? or do I go to the local Umart and pick it up for a dollar more?

        • Postage is pretty bad. Just under $17 to $37 for a single drive.

And I wouldn't recommend Umart any more. My local Umart, Gold Coast, has started demanding a drivers licence with credit card sales (I'm talking about in-store here, if you can believe it). F that.

@Chris McMahon: From my experience, if they're worried about credit card security, the staff should have to show you their drivers license when you pay with a credit card.

  • Good if you like to 'back up' your own BRD into .mkv etc otherwise just wait it out for the inevitable writer price drops.

    • Or if you want to use a HTPC to play blu-ray

      • thats what I use it for, though now I want a new case and most of the nice ones I like require a slim drive :/

  • Good deal, but the postage costs a fair bit (not suprising given the item's weight and dimension).

  • I have a 8x Writer in my HTPC and in 8 months never written a BDR, I archive most blurays to MKV. HHD is still cheaper than media at moment, If I do want to take a BDR Backup I will use my desktop because transcoding & repacking takes serious grunt more than a 45W AMD can do comfortably.

    • Yeah, as I expected.. Blu-Ray blanks are prohibitively expensive.. That's unlikely to change any time soon due to piracy concerns..

  • FWIW,
the blu-ray drive from my $99 standalone player works fine in my PC. Standard SATA data connector, 0.1"pins for power.

I just had to open the lid and attach a sata-USB adapter and usb cable. A bargain for occasional use - e.g. have to return the BD to the video library, but have not watched it yet.

Is this one OK for a HTPC? Or is it high-speed and noisy?

    • Which player would this be? Sounds interesting.

      • The Allure, as seen on ozbargain. Its just a reference-design, same as other house brands.
Is it common for BD players to use a drive with standard SATA plug? Was a pleasant surprise to me.
