Sleeping at Changi Singapore Airport for free

Hi,

I will be having a stopover in Changi Airport Singapore (arriving at 7pm & leaving at 10.15am the next day) in two weeks and looking for suggestion/s to get the most comfortable sleep for free within the airport. I am thinking about getting out of the airport for dinner and wonder around marina bay sands and go back for some rough sleep in the airport.

Cheers!

why not just pay 60 bucks for a hotel…and enjoy your holiday

    or

get food from bin, and spend no money at all

    • i am actually looking forward to it and considering it as a small adventure (weird, i know).

lol, definitely no food from the bin tho

goto gaylang 10, and spend 200 on a room and bird… you will have the adventure of a life time.

        • lol, no thanks :)

use the transit voucher (S$40) to pay for your dinner, buy some bottle drink, and ready made breakfast inside the airport.

use the dinner money ($10) to get one night sleep in one of the motel, its only 20 bucks or so. Wont bother sleeping rough when it's only $10-$15 more than what you originally plan to spend.

That way you have few hours more wandering around the city instead of heading back to airport

    • +1

doesn't seem like i am eligible for transit voucher as i am flying with scoot TZ1 "Scoot (specifically flight numbers TZ591 or TZ592)"

      can you recommend a motel?

      cheers.

I stayed at IStayInn last January for $22 a night in a four bed bunk

        IStayInn

close to Mrt and 5 mins walk to famous food hawkers. ask the nice lady to put you into one of the rooms with less people. sometimes you'll have the room to yourself

awesome, thanks for the recommendation. will definitely look into it.

          @kolorijo:
one of THE cheapest places to eat in sng is the airport ground level at the end, I cant remember which end but if you walk in from getting dropped off by taxi it is all the way to the right. 2-3 AUD per plate!

@WT: Singapore Food Street, Terminal 3.

You probably want to get something like this

you can get it cheaper from international senders.

There are plenty of quiet zones that have very comfortable day beds. Another option is the lounges. I'd recommend grabbing a few drinks at Harry's Bar and sleeping in a quiet zone. Wake up, grab some breakfast, a bit of shopping and board your flight.

I've been through Changi countless times and lived in Singapore for a year.

There's a hotel in Terminal 1 with a pool you can pay to gain access to if you want to go for a swim. SGD17 for entry.

those day beds look awesome… exactly what i am looking for… thank you :)

I've done this for 2 times now and about to do it again on the 22/07. Sleeping on the floor in Changi that is.

I head to Terminal 3 where the Haven lounge is, there's also a McDonald there where there are a LOTTTTTTTT of seats and a lottttttt of people sleeping on those seats. Just go and join them.

    • +1

guess i won't have to sleep on the floor :))))) i am going to bring an old pillow with me and throw it out after. thanks tom.

I recommend not to have too many belongings with you.
It's hard to sleep when you start thinking that people will steal your stuff.
Mind you, it's Singapore and it's an airport but i still trust no one..

    • +2

It's Singapore … they can tell you what you ate for breakfast last week immediately after you go to the bathroom. It's scary safe but good advice for anywhere else.

    • +1

I will have my carry on only as my luggage will be checked in to the final destination. I usually keep my important stuff in my small bag and clutch it to my chest while I am sleeping. I don't trust anyone either.

  • +3

Agree with the quiet zones. Have used it before and it was excellent, except for two very inconsiderate men who were very noisy when they arrived and then promptly went into a deep snore as soon as they settled…felt like pinching his nose closed :-(
Will you have checked luggage? That may change your plan a bit. What we did was stay airside until 6am,then went through immigration and collected our suitcase at lost and found. We then checked in again for onward journey, had breakfast and were on our way.

    • +1

We do have checked baggage through to our final destination so we don't need to wheel our luggage around. I am planning to have my earphones on while sleeping to block any noise as I can sleep with music on.

    Take notes from this guy.

I have booked one of these rooms before http://www.changiairport.com/en/airport-experience/attractio… when I had a really long flight. Other times I have just slept in the normal waiting area/lounge, they have sleeping pods/chairs thingy.

I had a look at those transit hotels and they are quite expensive, but look comfortable. I will be considering my options between hotels, hostels, and chairs. Thank you for the suggestion.

I had been through the same thing last year, 12 hours layover from 7:30 pm to 7:30 am. Good luck finding a spot in those nice looking snooze lounge. I went back and forth between the three terminals to find a spot but they were always occupied. In the end I just looked for a quiet place with some chairs and slept there (but more like doze off for half an hour then awake and then doze off then awake). I was quite anxious and checked my baggage occasionally just to make sure it's there.

If the ticket saves you > $400 compared to the others then you should consider the hotel in terminal 1 or other accommodation outside of the airport.

you confirmed my fear… i might have to be prepared to settle to sleeping on chairs or benches. i have done this previously in shorter period when i arrived in Cairns from Japan at ungodly hour 4am and my next flight was at 9am, so i was sleeping on a chair and held my dearest belonging to my chest tightly.

i have not done this for a long layover period such as this and i am quite excited to do it (no better place to try it out then singapore airport i think), so it's not just for the sake of saving some money, it's for the experience as well :p

Heard there was a young local couple who had actually lived in the airport

I actually tried to catch some sleep in the computer area but being a fussy sleeper, it was a terrible experience.

    • I can sleep anywhere if I can move around. The only place that I have problem sleeping is inside the plane so I am always dreading the night flight back to Oz.

Was there just 4 weeks ago, found a reasonably quiet carpeted spot and slept on the floor so I could stretch out. Slept like a log. Was woken by polite security for passport check and then allowed to get back to sleep. Another guy near us had a sleeping mat and sleeping bag and he looked very comfortable. Given your schedule, its really not worth the expense paying to sleep elsewhere. No harm sleeping wild, humans have done it for thousands of years. Just pack a blanket/sleeping bag in your hand luggage as airport aircon can be a tad chilly.

    • i can sleep on a wooden floor on my back soundly (done this when we just moved into our unit and had only 1 mattress the ms). good idea with blanket too. thanks.

  • Want an adventure, stay at my mate's hostel. I used to work in the corporate world with this guy, he left it to follow his dreams and opened this place in Singapore. Great Hostel, it's a brilliant place with brilliant people. Will cost you about 20 Singapore Dollars or thereabouts, breakfast included so you're sorted for food in the morning. And it's close to the airport (2 or 3km), will cost you a couple of bucks to get there. Full details on his site.

  • Ah yah, why so cheap one lah, get hotel lah

    • thanks for the suggestion :)

I was planning to do the same, but your incredibly convincing and well-argued suggestion has convinced me to get a hotel….

Just walk up to a cop at the airport and start chewing on gum.
You will get a free nights stay in a comfy cell, not certain what time check out is tho.

    • Lol, i tip my hat to you sir, that's hilarious.
