Xiaomi Mi Pad 2 64GB Vs Teclast T98 4G

Fellow OzBargainers,

I want to buy a decent tablet (8" or 10" display, RAM >=2GB, Price ~$300, Good Display and decent performance - don't want the sluggish ones).

My usage would mainly be to browse internet (Ozbargain, and many other websites), light gaming, Online videos, Movies, reading ebooks and bit of Excel spreadsheets.

iPads and Samsungs seem too costly. After bit of online browsing, found 2 tablets - Xiaomi Mi Pad 2 64GB (~$300) and Teclast T98 4G (~250)

Have any of you tried any of these or have any suggestions?

Thanks for taking time to read this and really appreciate if you provided any suggestions.

Teclast T98 4G is a 2014 tablet so you're going to be stuck with Android 4.4 compared to the Android 5.1 in the Mi Pad 2. It also lacks a dev community compared to Xiaomi. You're also going to get far less storage in the Teclast.

Downside is no 4G connectivity in the Mi Pad 2. I'm not sure how fast the Mediatek SoC is compared to the Cherry Trail.

    • Interesting, sounds like Teclast is a 'No'.

In mi pad 2, is there cellular data function? I believe that is only wifi.

      • Yeah only wifi in the Mi Pad 2. Finding 4G in anything larger than 8" gets difficult.

        • Thanks @clear. It seems to be good value for its spec and looks.

  • I'm in the market for something similar to you OP, just leaving a comment here so I can come back later and see if anyone suggests anything good.

    • Hi there, sure, I am getting inclined towards Xiaomi Mi pad 2 Android 64Gb - most of the reviews are good.

      • Thanks… The Xiaomi does look good, so does the NVIDIA Shield, however neither of these seem to have 3G/4G which is a deal breaker for me. I'm looking for something cheap to browse the web on my daily commute.

        • May be go for 8" Cube T8 plus that @mskeggs got

Check out Chris' reviews of Chinese tablets at TechTablets.com or his YouTube channel. He is a Kiwi but don't hold it against him … his reviews are top notch.

    • Thanks @kywst. These reviews are good and helpful.

  • I have an 8" Cube T8 plus. It performs pretty well, and the 4G is nice. It isn't a premium quality device like the Mi Pad, it has a plastic case and screen, but the trade off is it is light and cheap.
I have a long commute, and the 4g is very useful to me, but my ideal device would be the Mi Pad if it had cellular and an SD Card slot.
For me, the trade off seems to be cellular vs size/weight vs quality vs price. It seems hard to get everything in one device.

    • Interesting, how's the performance? Is it sluggish in response when you perform any action? Moreover, what's the price for this?

I agree that an SD card slot and cellular function would have made a big difference, but with 64GB version, I think one shortcoming can be overcome.

      • It is pretty good. It takes a long time to load the game Splendor, and returning to Udemy courses takes a little while too, but otherwise I have noticed no lag/stutter.
I guess I wouldn't recommend it unless your priority is the cost saving. It doesn't have the quality 'feel' that the high end models have. It feels a bit plasticy.

But it cost $190 with express delivery, and at that price I can upgrade every 18 months and always have a new system. It's always a trade off!

Though the price difference isn't big between Mi pad 2 16gb model vs the cube that you've mentioned, however 3g is the differentiator.

Anyways, I have ordered Xiaomi 64gb. Will post my review here after I get it.

        • @wanderingeyesau:
Agree with your reasoning, but the Cube and a 64Gb SD card is the price leader, while I think the Mi Pad is the quality leader, if you can live without the cellular.
I don't really understand why adding cellular and an SD slot is so hard for Xiaomi. It would add less than $10 to the cost, and they could sell it for $50 extra, or more.

        • @mskeggs:
That's actually a very good question. Don't know what stopped them from adding these 2 features.
They had SD card slot in mi pad 1, but took it away in their newer version.

They must be working on the cellular version as well as it will complete their tablet and customer with budget won't look beyond mi pad.

  • Been using Mi pad 2 ow for few weeks now - so far it's quite good given for it's price tag. One issue that I have faced:
    - quite a number of the apps that I use on the phone and other tablet is not compatible with mi pad 2 - example CarSales.com.au, RealEstate.com.au
