Sony PlayStation Plus Auto-renewal - Annual payment taken, can I get it back?

Hi all,

Like many new parents my console has been neglected for months, Saturday I decided it was time to sell it so set about wiping it and deactivating the account. As is typical I was interrupted before cancelling my subscription. Sunday I get my email saying your "payment has been accepted, Playstation Plus is renewed for another year" and that $69.99 gone from my account.

I know Sony have a 14 day cooling off period, so I followed the process for a refund, however Sony refused the refund as "this is not valid on subscription renewals" apparently because their original contract details the policy.

End of the day, if its the law and I agreed, then I guess I have to grin and bear it, but just asking here as you guys seem to have a handle on consumer law.

Thanks

John

  • Are you looking to get another Sony console any time soon? Do you care if the account is lost? You could always try a credit card charge back.

  • Ideally at some point in the future I'd like to start the account up again, but my youngest is 1 and I'll likely not have "free time" on the lounge TV for years. Maybe when the next generation of Playstation VR sets come out I can game without innocent eyes seeing the FPS carnage.

In the mean time I don't want to try and block card charges, so I have emailed them and said I dispute their policy. It maybe futile but I really think a simple email 1 week before, "hey your subscription is about to renew, just a heads up" would be a responsible action from such a large company, rather than a "hey we have your cash, shame you forgot :P" approach.

I'll let you know if anything comes of it. In the mean time I might scan through the ACCC website and see if it offers any protection/ideas.

  • My subscription expired last week, I got this generic email exactly one month before it was going to expire sent from [email protected]:

"You’ve proved yourself against the best, explored new worlds and taken your gaming to the next level. Your PlayStation®Plus membership is about to run out, but there’s no need to let it end. Simply make sure you have a valid credit or debit card linked to your Sony Entertainment Network account, and we’ll renew it for you.

If you're all set up, we'll automatically renew your PlayStation®Plus membership on 21.06.2016. We'll charge your credit or debit card on the same day.

If you'd like to cancel automatic renewal, follow the link below, click on the subscription you want to cancel and choose "cancel automatic renewal." You will retain your membership benefits until the end of the current billing period."

  • Hi jmally25,

I'll have to have a look for that, that being the case I owe them an apology. I guess I'll just have to take it on the chin.

    Thanks

    John

  • I did the free trial about 2 years ago and forgot to cancel. They charged me for 1 month at the end of it and would not refund the money. However this was only $10 rather than $70. Check if they sent you an email. If they didn't warn you you might have a chance of getting it reversed, however if they told you it was coming you might be out of luck.

Also, my experience with trying to get a refund from Sony made me so sour on them that I am reluctant to purchase anything else from them in case I have an issue.

  • I got this problem, how did you go about this?
