    do they have cheap toner?

    • Toner cartridges are $85

      • +8

Not to mention difficult to get a hold of.. The Brother HL-1110 for $45 at Officeworks is better in the long run with $19 toner refills from eBay.

        • i just checked the price on their site its not 45, where do u get it at 45?

      • +6

Just buy 4-5 printers. Lucky to print a ream of paper here in a year.

        • +1

It's far more economical to buy bulk toner refill for the Brother mentioned above. Each bottle of refill is cheap and can do multiple refills of 1700 pages yield.

        • +1

Just keep the cartridges and throw the extra printers into landfill or your neighbours bin.
I love how this is the business model of these large 'green' tech companies to sell disposable printers knowing full well that half the buyers will do this, hoping to profit off the other half that actually buy genuine ink.

    • Just buy 4 of these, toner problem solved.

Just the free market at work where its cheaper to buy a whole printer instead of the toner refills.

      • Lol yep, crazy that the toner is more valuable. Went to a cashies one day and saw a mountain of printers for $2 i kid you not.

Wonder wat the owner got for it, 20c?

      • +3

Apparently these printers only come with a starter cartridge. So you're comparing a partly filled cartridge to a fully filled one.

And also i bet you could buy a compatible toner cartridge for these printers off say eBay for a fraction of the price of what that genuine cartridge costs.

I recently bought a compatible black 1300 page toner cartridge for my HP Color Laserjet Pro M177fw printer for $25 off an eBay seller (Aussie Toner) when the genuine one is $99 at Officeworks. So you can see how compatible toner cartridges are a lot cheaper.

Was $19.99 last deal - handy for the comments.

Discussion of toners, economics, OS issues (apparently won't work with Mac), even link to photos of disassembled device.

No longer listed online, so may be store specific deal.

They should make an animated movie about printers who are trying to desperately avoid their ultimate destination: landfill. Only then will the message get through not to buy a cheap printer with expensive toner/ink (or short drum life).

    • Of course, everyone here knows that the ONLY way to get the message through is to show people a full length animated feature film about printers and nobody will get the message until we force them to watch it.

What do you think we are, fools?

      • +1

nobody will get the message until we force them to watch it

Didn't say anything about forcing anyone to watch it; they'll pay or download like everyone else and do it out of their own free will. Just like buying a printer nobody is forced to buy.

It's amazing how much e-waste is produced from the pricing policies of printer companies. Of course they aren't the only companies that are guilty of it. I am amazed their scam has gone on this long. I think a movie would go a long way to getting the message across, yes. All the companies like to talk green but they are hypocrites and a movie would bring this under the spotlight. Something would change. They would be forced to act.

        • +2

The movie, "Robots" touched on that theme. The megacorporation wanted to stop selling spare parts so the Robots couldn't repair themselves anymore and would be forced to buy more expensive "upgraded" models to transfer there minds into.

        • -1

          What scam?

Also I think you're greatly over estimating the power of film :D

    • +3

      exactly !
Just like we stopped burning fossil fuel when "the day after tomorrow" came out. And endless racism-themed movies have ended prejudice and xenophobia hundreds of times over.

    • How would you stop manufacturers producing cheaply (with high margins) which is the problem in the first place?

For commodity goods they can only compete on price.

  • +2

    a yield of 500 pages.

Dang! Need to print my thesis and its 501 pages

    • just gotta pull the toner out, give it a shake, put it back in, should be able to squeeze a few more out it :D

      • +3

Nah, they put a page counter on the consumables these days… Even if you print 500 pages with nothing but a single dot on them, it will "expire". After all, wouldn't want people to use underhanded tricks like refilling the cartridges.. ;P

        • +1

There is often an override mode. Eg on HP laser printers.

    • Then head to uni print shop and print off the last page for $0.15 (thats what i paid last time)

      • 8c at office works!

        • -1

And use paywave for 6 cents as a split transaction with cash, the remaining 2 cents rounding down.

    • You do know 500 page yield cart is based on 5% coverage right? Which is equivalent to printing a glorified letterhead. So in real world use that starter cart is good for 100-150 pages max

  • +3

Is this printer small enough to install in my car? I have a 600w inverter in the boot. I'd like to be able to print stuff myself at uni without using the uni printers.

    • +5

I just got a "pimp my ride" image with this comment.

      • I remember UTS had free printing back in the day for students, we'd be getting the tightarses coming in printing off entire textbooks (500+ pages) in one go.. needless to say they ended that one after a short while..

        • +1

Always gotta be people that ruin it for everybody else.

        • -1

I've got free printing at UNSW because my parents put $40 on my print card every semester. But the Uni printers are crap and I can't print directly because of their crappy web print interface. With a printer in my car I can print whenever I want.

        • @niggard:

And put your parents $40 towards petrol to run the engine that charges the battery that powers the inverter that powers the printer. Upload a picture when complete. Awesome idea.

      Dimensions (W x D x H) 402 x 368.5 x 119 mm
      Weight 6.7kg.

      Hope that helps!

      • +1

        Thanks!

    • Awesome idea. Just be careful. Some laser printers draw a lot of power for a split second when starting up. This may blow a fuse. It will still be worth trying.

I don't understand why Spotlight sell laser printers

    • I was thinking that, the spotlight near me in Brisbane is a giant fabric store.

    • The same reason Myer sells nutella. To make money.

Then again rethinking it. Maybe dress makers can print out designs before they star cutting the fabric. So they would need a printer.

Peple who do cross stitch or crochet can print patterns also.

I remembered when we did screen printing on tshirts. We print the design on paper first cut out bits we need so the paint will only stick to the shirt fabric where we want.

      • Cut paper transfer is good for the littlins.

In my uni days, used to sell t-shirts I designed - were very popular. Laser print design onto transparency, apply photo-sensitive emulsion to screen & attach transparency, expose to strong light, wash off unexposed areas, dry, print while drinking beer, dry, sell outside uni parties & functions, join in party.

Plenty of creative uses for laser printers ;-)

      • woah, I just hit 88Mph and saw some serious sh#t

Cheap enough to buy and leave on the middle if a busy road for giggles

    • Preferably a road that motorbikes do not frequent.

  • Everyone's talking about toner, e-waste, Mac compatibility…what I want to know is why is a laser on sale at Spotlight?

    • Read my reply. I gave reasons why they do. There could be other reasons but cant think of more right now.

      • Elderly sewing ladies print stuff too

        • Blasphemy. That never happens. 😂

guys, ive been in the printer / copier industry for way too long.
heres the short story on these cheap printers.
companies subsidise the manufacture cost and count on consumables at an incredible mark up cost to make ton of $$
basically sell heaps at a loss initially and rape consumers later to keep using it.
yes this business model works well hense all the cheap printers under $100 you couldnt buy for many times that 10 yrs ago .
all printers either inkjet or laser/toner have starter carts at an industry standard of 1/3 full.
using cheap generic toners is ok sometimes but a lucky dip and may damage mc.
good sign of bad toner is buildup on the heat/pressure rollers if you can see/access them.
on cheap printers like these if bad toner kills it you bin it no worries as costs nothing anyways…
total costs per page is only way to work out on printers worth as cost of printer is not always a guide…
good find on these throw aways …..
    cheers… hope this helps……

  • Been using our cheap Brother HL-1430 for around 10 years (possibly a touch more), over 50K pages and it's only ever had (Australian) eBay generic refills.

Sure, I wouldn't use generic inks in my Epson photo printer… But generic toner, never an issue !!

    B.

    • you have been very lucky with toner refils.
this is from many yrs exp…… toner refils can and do work but there is usually a generic refil toner/developer that is used.
printers have big varying heat ratings to fuse/melt ink into paper.
good refillers will stear clear of the borderline ones and use ones specific to certain ranges of machines.
some dont give a shit and except many wont complain etc as theres so much margin in it they will just give you another one to replace it.

epsons generally have fixed print heads in inkjets so if bad ink blocks print head then you have not many choices but to throw out unless you are able to clean / purge it to acceptable print quality again.

there is a big toner store chain i have witnessed using bad toner and just accept the return rate if people bother, buggered if i know why people would shop there after being burned but some are gluttons for punishment i suppose.
no i wont disclose who , but they are biggest storefront one as a hint…

Thank you OP, I bought 2 printers there this morning. Still have some left.

  • Keytek $44 toner, not bad but in long run still expensive. But Ricoh are work horse laser printers. I got a cheap Brother HL-110 and it's quite cheap for toners. But all these cheap laser printers after a couple of years or depends on the amount of printing capacity you do. They just stop working. The small units are only designed for a life cycle of so many thousands of prints then they are a chuck away unit. But cheap is cheap and buying another cheap replacement is the way to go these days.
