The hidden meaning in Dan Murphy's prices

Not sure if this is already on here (couldn't find it, apologies if someone has already mentioned it), but I was served by a really helpful guy at Dan Murphy's who let me know how to read their prices.

What he told me was:
Prices ending in 9 are their normal prices ($41.99)
Prices ending in 5 are a special of theirs ($41.95)
Prices ending in 0 are a price match to a competitor ($41.90)

This was when looking at spirits, not sure if it's the same for wine or beers.

Hope this helps you for spotting bargains when in store!

Thanks. This is good to know.
However, surely some competitor prices may not end with 0. What then? If DM price match them, they may not end in 0, in fact, they may end in 9 or 5. (Unless DM round down to 0, to beat the competitor?)

      I think they round down.

  • This sounds like a load of rubbish :D

    Very interesting. Thanks for sharing.

Costco does similar. From memory. $x.99 are regular prices, $x.97 store markdowns, and items with other odd numbered cent amounts are one-off manufacturer specials. I think there are a few other codes too, but can't remember them all.

    Hi,
I'm actually a manager at Dans and Yes, this is usually a good indication of what's on special, but it is not 100%.
There are times when items are on great specials that can also end in .99c
