Mag Wheels Advice - Online Package?

Hi All,

Looking for advice on Mag + Wheel Combos - I've had my car for quite a while and looking to give it a new look. I've signed up with online retailers Ozzy Tyres and Tyre Craze to get their specials.

Has anyone used either of these guys before? I'm finding that even with the specials I'm receiving it's still $1400 for a set of 18s with VERY BASIC tyres (25% discount included). They then charge an extra 2-300 for a set of Kumho Tyres (these would be a minimum 'standard') $1700ish total.

I've found that to maximise the savings from an online retailer is to purchase the mags from one of the two above (with the 25% off) and then engage Tyroola for tyres and a local retailer to fit them. This then comes to 1200-1300 with better tyres.

Have you used these guys? Do local stores provide better deals? Am I better to visit chain stores like Jaxs or Bob Jane?

Appreciate your help. :-)

Edit: Location Gold Coast

Have you looked on ebay or gumtree?
Sometimes you can get some pretty new rims for pretty cheap there, with 90% thread.

  • Try https://www.performancealloys.com/ - I'm not sure if it's bargains or not, that comes down to which wheels you're after.

Regarding tyres - try getting good tyres at a good price, rather than very basic tyres, after all tyres are the only things keeping you in contact with the road.

I didn't get rims online however, I did score some Goodyear F1 Eagle GSD3 tyres for 99 per corner including fitting, balancing and alignment. This was through eBay at the time.

Keep in mind that there tyre shops don't have the shelf space to cater for all the brands out there. Don't limit yourself to just a few tyre shops.

For example you could buy 18" Rota wheels for $1100 then put on your own tyres. You've saved money and got safe tyres for less than the mag+wheel combos you are looking at.

    http://www.tempetyres.com.au/

good to deal with, cheap freight.

bob jane doesnt have much variety.

  • Just my personal experience but i have bought rim/tyre packages off Ozzy Tyres 4 times. However, i have gone in store not bought them online. I recommend you call them. Tell them your budget and see what they can do for you. If you are looking for something a bit different, i recommend them. Keep an eye out on their facebook page for deals and offers too.

My advice is not to change your stock wheels unless they have a serious issue, don't go by the looks, non famous brands are poorly manufactured and you may need to get them balanced/swapped many times by the tyre shop until you're driving comfortably.
If I have to swap my mags I would pay that amount for a second hand brand name Japanese or European manufactured from gumtree or wreckers just visually check them for cracks or bends carefully

I find that you'll get a lot of 'hate' from the general car community unless you go with the high end performance wheels. (BBS, OZ Racing, Enkei, Rays etc). It's good and bad.

With these non performance wheels packages you are considering - generally they are quite poorly manufactured compared to your factory wheels or otherwise you should bite the bullet and spend on some high end performance wheels.

I've owned XXR 527's before - and after a few potholes, I noticed vibration on my steering wheel. I took the car in to get inspected, turns out the wheels were buckled.

My advice: $1500 can get you some really nice wheels second hand with tyres. A set of EVO 10 BBS wheels second hand sell for $1500.00. They're proper forged wheels(Very strong), that are lightweight! This will give you a lot more 'street credit', which I assume is a factor if you want to upgrade the look of your car. At the same time, hold on to your original wheels, because when you sell your car, you can put the factory ones back on and recover the entire $1500 back.

  • Just trawling Automotive and saw this late. My 2c anyway.

Your strategy for mixing wheel/tyre retailers is a good one in theory, so long as they're both honest. If they claim "This tyre won't take a balance!" (ala Simpsons) and they try blaming the wheel…you can see where I'm going.

That aside, I've used Tempe Tyres for an online combo purchase in 2004. Shipped to WA on a mini pallet and everything was present, correct and perfect. Right down to 34psi in each tyre.
