I've got a Japanese PS3 with a faulty blu-ray drive. I'd like to try and get it working so I can play Shadow of the Colossus HD.
Does anyone know if it's region locked, or if I can indeed play PAL PS3 games on the console here?

I guess I've just got to chase down a blu-ray drive and Japanese power cable!
Try Global Consoles. They seem alright and charge up to $199 for the Blu Ray drive depending on the issue (laser realignment/drive replacement). You'd have to get in touch to ask about sending it to their shop.
They are based in Victoria but they seem to advertise their services Australia wide, so you might just have to send in the console.
Normal power cable will work.
You can't just put in a new Blu-ray drive, look up Blu-ray drive marriage.
Might be better to use it for digital games.Already mentioned below.
Don't fix the blu-ray player for Shadow Of The Colossus HD, ICO/SotC HD is like $20 to download from the Playstation store for PS3.
If you ever want to play something from a disc, look into fixing it then.

Yep. Might depend on the console (look at the back) but it's probably a standard "kettle cord" power cable you can buy for cheap.
genuine PS3 controllers are still pricey, but the PS3 knock-off controllers I've bought aren't as bad as for some consoles. They cost around $20 delivered on ebay.
You're right about the PS3 controllers being pricey. They are $1 MORE expensive than PS4 genuine controllers at Target! Crazy… Are there any PS3 ebay controllers that you can recommend? Thanks

I bought a HDMI cable to ensure the PS3 even works before buying a controller but unfortunately it seems to have the YLOD… 3 beebs, then shuts down…

My search says games are region free. Only thing region locked are movies.
From experience my Australian PS3 is able to play games from Asia and Europe, and Blu Rays from the UK (same region as Australia).
