New Telstra Aircard 810s Wi-Fi Using up Data Fast!

The person reporting this to me has stated that the device appears to be constantly uploading/downloading (usage meter)— even when he's not online. He rang Telstra & their "solution" was to turn off the unit! He says this did NOT occur using his older stick-type USB modem. With the new modem, he had a huge bill, when previously he never used his quota- ever.

I'm trying to figure out how to know where it's all going?

Is there a good, reliable, free meter or network checker he can run- maybe from a laptop or such, whilst connected?

Thanks all

I have 2 of the advanced II Aircard A790S for work and they are both definitely using a heap of data. I haven't spoken to Telstra about it (work account) but it is concerning.

    • Thanks for corroborating this.

    even when he's not online

He may not be online but other devices are, chromecast may be continuously downloading backgrounds or windows is updating, it's not possible that the Telstra card is downloading data for itself

    • He has one laptop, and even when it's shutdown, the downloads continue.

      • No mobile phones or tablets? icloud sync or photo sharing can contribute to this high data usage. Change the wifi password and join them one by one while watching the download status on the card until you find which one is causing it.

Had that problem with another similar device:
When you disconnect from the device, the device itself does not disconnect from Telstra. Every "Timeout" you get charged for the "Handshake" Kb of download.
Try to login to the admin web interface of the device, before you disconnect your laptop/tablet/ipad, and disconnect from in there.
The USB devices recognized the disconnection, and passed it on to the "Modem" part.

    • Thank you, Camel,

I'll have a go on his behalf.
