Bought 2 of these in a previous deal.

Very good quality for the price you pay, I have a BlackVue one at the front which costs 5 x this and the quality isn't much better if perceivable at all.

    • +3

      yeah they're good.
The only issue I've discovered is if I turn the power on, but don't start the engine within a minute or two, when I do start it, the unit powers off.

      • +2

Same issue. i wish there was a fix for it!

      • can you please elaborate on this issue? If this cam is connected using cigarette plug then how does it know if engine is ON or OFF. As far as it gets power it should say ON?
I have different brand cam that is directly connected to fuse box and it works fine irrespective of engine is ON or OFF.

        • it's plugged into the ciggie lighter. If I turn the key to Acc/On it powers up. if I tuen the ignotion on before it powers up then it's fine, but once it powers up & then I turn the ignition, it powers off. I suspect the a small power outage when turning the ignition & if it on, it detects this power off state, it starts the power down sequence (writes files to the sd card, etc). I just re-plug in the power cable & it starts up again.

        • +1

I think some cars drop their system voltage for a longer period while cranking than others so if the camera turns on with the key in 'Ignition' mode then when the key is twisted to crank the engine over the power drops lower and longer than it's designed to then the camera thinks the car has been switched off so it goes into shutdown mode and ignores the fact that the power is restored milliseconds later. Not really a fault with the camera or the car, just one of those you wont know until you try. Best solution is to return the camera and buy a battery powered version.

EDIT: Yes, exactly what supabruddas is dealing with!

        • @supabrudda: Thanks for you reply. hmm this is a bug.

I use one of this cable to connect cam directly to fuse box. When I turn on ignition camera powers on and it stays ON. I haven't tried this on your model of camera.

something like this will work: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Mini-USB-Car-Hard-Wire-Kit-for-Mi…

Make sure you get correct plug, it comes with MINI or MICRO USB cable.

It will not drain car battery if you buy cable with auto-cutoff feature. If you battery drops below certain volt, cam will automatically switch off.

I faced this issue and was really frustrated. I couldn't bother to send it back to Everbuying so decided to experiment with it. I installed BlueSkySea firmware (2013 version) and has been working well - no issue if you start/restart the car. I can see some menu items missing but they are minor things. I am searching for the latest version of BlueSkySea firmware.

What I noticed is that it accommodates the short blank-out when the engine is cranked. Looks more like a setting in the firmware.

    • I bought one from previous post here on Oz…
It left gaps in the recording. Mucked around with various settings, but no joy. I sent it back.

  • I have one.

tempted to get 2nd one for rearview,

does anyone know how I can connect up 2 cams? I only have one cigarette jack?

    • You can buy 2 in 1 connector Power Charger

    • I don't think they draw much power so a splitter should work
      https://www.google.com.au/search?q=car+cigarette+lighter+spl…

    • +2

Get a couple of long Mini USB cables, and a dual output USB cigarette adapter

      • I don't think you can use a usb output as the cable that comes with the dashcam has a cigarette plug that converts it to the required power for the camera.
You can get a dual cigarette adapter for $3.98 on ebay.

        • +3

The cameras run off 5V which is the standard output for USB. Some people run these cameras off the USB port on their stereo head unit! As long as it's 5V at around 1A these will work fine.

  • +1

Very happy with mine. Going strong since I bought in the last deal.

  • +2

I have two of this exact model - and yes they may be cheap but they are next to useless.
As they have no battery, sure the battery does not break - bonus… but they're no good when not powered up! 0- cannot come online for G-sensing etc in an accident if they have no battery.

Secondly the capacitor seems to do nothing. I rarely leave the car for more than 3 days without driving, yet the date and time do not stay set unless it's used every three hours.

Less than six months old, one of my two has stopped recording altogether, and the other one doesn't know what day it is so they're all first of Jan 0000 at 00:00 sort of thing, no way to find the actual footage you need.

My advice, avoid, pay decent money and get a decent camera.

    • +2

Been running a capacitor model for 2 years no issue - even bought it from Gearbest.
It's been left in the car on 44 degree days.
Clock didn't miss a beat & car was off for 1 month.
While running, the G sensor locks a file so it doesn't overwrite.
My advice, save your money & buy one (or two) of these.

    • Strange. The dozens (literally) I've purchased are still going strong and they're all 7-12 months old now. I do agree the occasional time & date reset problem can be annoying but the other issues you mention aren't actually problems from what I can tell. Each to their on though, I wanted a simple capacitor based dashcam and these fit the bill perfectly without costing a fortune. If you want more then you pay more.

Wire it into your car fuse box for power when the car isn't being used.

      • Never knew this could be done. Interesting

        • +1

Something like http://www.jaycar.com.au/double-mini-blade-fuse-socket-wire-…, and then you could wire in something like http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/DC-12V-to-5V-3A-Step-down-Convert… to it and just connect the camera to that :)

        • @gokhanh: Thanks much, something to consider for me. I don't know squat about what's under the hood though. But would this drain the battery when the engine is off?

        • @Uncharted: I'm not sure how much power it would use whilst the car is off, I would imagine if left long enough it could drain the battery though.

        • @Uncharted: Trawl through the previous deals as all this info is in there. From memory, I tested these and they drew approx. 400-500mA so a car battery should easily be able to keep one of these going 24/7 for a week or two (or more) before running into any troubles. Actual time will vary greatly depending on what type of car and battery and the condition of that battery though but yes, as long as your battery is in good condition you should easily be able to leave something like this powered up for a few days without worrying about flattening it.

        • +3

          @SteveAndBelle:

Car batteries aren't that powerful. From Google, "A standard small car battery is about 45 amp/hours."
          https://www.google.com.au/search?q=car+battery+amp+hours

So at 500mA drawn from the battery, you'd get 90 hours, less than four days. If that 500mA measurement was at 5V, then the current drawn at 12V will be about 260mA, so you'd get 173 hours - a week and five hours.

That's also assuming you don't want to start the car at the end of the week, as there won't be any power left.

A large car battery would probably get you to two weeks, but you may not be able to start the car.

I only know this because I once had the alternator fail in a previous car - the field current didn't turn off, and drew about half an amp. Over a normal weekend, it would still start on Monday if I didn't drive it during the weekend. I got caught out by a long weekend. That was with a medium-size car (Toyota Seca).

        • @gokhanh:

You need to be careful with DC-DC converters. They'll often use whatever current they're rated at (3A in the case above) regardless of what is required and dump the excess as heat. So if this camera drew 500mA then the converter would effectively be a little 30 Watt heater (2.5A x 12V).

        • @Uncharted: No, it will not drain car battery if you buy cable with auto-cutoff feature. If you battery drops below certain volt, cam will automatically switch off.

something like this will work: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Mini-USB-Car-Hard-Wire-Kit-for-Mi…

  • Bought this last time from previous deal. Unable to set date and time after device has gone through reset. Anyone know how to do it?

    • The only thing I could suggest is set the clock first thing after reset. Seriously crappy menu system.
Otherwise, bin it mate, or send it back.

I wouldn't buy another one of these with your money.

  • Bought one.

  • Cool just bought another one for our new Van at work

  • Bought one awhile back. So far pretty happy with it.
    Just a few issues:
    1. Can be tricky to mount so that it is out of the way of sightlines but still captures good vision.
    2. Can be painful to run the lead between the dash/windshield and the cigarette lighter socket so the lead isn't always in the way of stuff.
    3. The unit will lose settings if it is left long enough without the car being run. In our experience a day or two is fine. Longer than that is no good.

      1. Can be painful to run the lead between the dash/windshield and the cigarette lighter socket so the lead isn't always in the way of stuff.

If you have the skills, run the wires from the dome light instead. Always safer to add a fuse in line, too.

      • And if I don't have the skills?

        • Buy a long mini USB cable and run it around the windshield, down the A pillar concealing it and across up under the glove box and dash area to the console where the USB plug is, it isn't perfect, but it works for me. At least there isn't a cable hanging down through the middle of the truck.

  • I'm after the G1W - HC, any coupon codes available for this ?

  • I just bought a car, If i was to purchase 2 of these how should you hide the wires or how to avoid them from getting unplugged since there in the way? Also how does it work? does it automatically start recording from the moment you set it? Also does it beep or something when the memory is full? lol I have no idea someone enlighten me as I really need one :)

    • great questions id also like to know this, especially how does it get power without hanging a cable down from the roof?

      • Yes, these are fully autonomous ie. they bootup and start recording as soon as you start the car then automatically close the recorded file properly and shut down when the car is switched off.

For your other questions it probably best to refer to a previous deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/238071

    • +1

Having the dashcam connected to the cigarette lighter does not cause me any issues. Sure, there's a wire hanging down but so what?
The camera will start recording as soon as you turn on your car and it will switch off when you turn your car off.

The camera continually records on an SD card in 1,3 or 5 minute files. When the card is full, the oldest file is deleted and so on. You will never have to 'manually' delete a file in day to day operations.

    • Change the currency of the site to USD first.

      • It seems to be what he has listed above.

I didn't need to, I just had to use the Mobile site. It still doesn't explain why the desktop site shows the product as AUD $55 and once added to cart jumps to $71.

  • 30/60 frames per second for smooth video flow

To clarify, because this comment is a bit misleading, I'm quite sure it can only record at 60fps when the video quality is set to 720p or lower. At 1080p you'll only be able to record at 30fps.

  • How long does a full charge last?

    • +5

      Roughly 2.8 seconds.

This unit is sans battery, just enough to end the recording file properly upon losing power (engine shut off).

  • Hey guys, i am after one that does front, back and reverse camera + gps(optional) Any suggestions? Any way we can avoid the cables or at least hide them from view.

    • +1

The best option is to buy 2 of these and run the cables under hood lining and behind the side pillars etc.

    • A camera like this in the rear, would have the screen where the camera is, but they do have an AV out, this could be wired to a screen in your dash. Then you'd need a screen though.

  • Are you guys getting both the 4.8% CR cashback AND the 2% mobile site cashback? CR directs to the full site, so I copy+pasted the mobile url to the browser. Not sure if CR still tracks it?

  • Is the conversion rate a paypal one?

    • +1

Don't you decide via paypal whether you are using the paypal conversion or your own card providers conversion?

      • I own debit card

        • Then yes, it's paypal. You don't have a choice.

  • +1

Thanks to the mods who fixed description - purchased a similar model and have been very happy with cam…saved me $$$$ for an accident that i was not at fault

  • +1

I bought this model from same mob sometimes back. It has very good reviews.. I used it in couple of trips and tried to get the video played on multiple laptops with different windows OS's.. however none of them could play that video format (I can't remember what) and I finally gave up using it.

    • Try VLC player.

      • I did with no luck.
When I played the video on the camera itself it looks good. But I don't understand why they used a format that can't be played on common players with available decoders.

        • Did you try Media Player Classic? What is the format that your video is been saved as? Should be saved as .MOV which I use VLC to play it with.

  • Thanks op.

And qs - how are you getting that conversion rate? Paypal atm is giving me not as good a rate.

    • +2

You need to change your PayPal settings if you want to pay in USD. Otherwise PayPal will do the USD > AUD conversion instead of your credit card and you'll end up paying more with a weaker exchange rate. MasterCard rates right now for USD > AUD are 1.5126 so USD $34.25 = ~AU $46.75 but with PayPal USD $34.25 = ~AU $48.43

Ensure your credit card doesn't charge foreign conversion fees. 28 Degress Mastercard etc

Instructions on how to change your PayPal billing currency:
Login to PayPal, click settings, click payments, click pre-approved payments, click select available funding sources, next to the credit card you want to pay with click 'conversion options', then click 'Bill me in the currency listed on the seller's invoice.'

      • Thanks much. I switched the site to USD but silly me, missed the settings in paypal unfort. Already just bought 2 cams.
70.5USD ~ 99AUD. I decided to not dwell on the ~$5 difference at the risk of this getting ozbargained away. But now I know for next time, thanks :)

  • How do you actually apply the EB 100 coupon code along with DWAL on the mobile site? It only lets me select one…

    • I don't really understand what you mean, you apply the coupon code in your cart, and the EB points in checkout?

  • Figured it out, was trying to checkout via paypal at the first instance, works fine now. Bought 2 thanks OP.

  • Thank you Op.
Bought and paid with Paypal this morning

    Exchange rate
    $48.43 AUD = $34.25 USD
    1 Australian Dollar = 0.71 US Dollar

Do not forget you can convert your flagship smartphone to an advanced dashcam with more functions by using some apps as cheap as free!

    • Yes, but watch out for mounting a smart phone in a hot windscreen, the battery would not like too much heat. Apple iPhones will show a warning and stop working if too hot.

  • hey guys,
over the weekends, park my car at a shopping center. i came back with a big indent plus white paint (i have a black car, my blood pressure rocketed!!). Just a quick question, does the camera keep filming even when your away from the car?

    • not this one, its the capacitor version meaning it only runs on your car's power/battery. it shuts off within seconds of you powering down your engine.
but correct me if i'm wrong.

    • sorry to hear it. But did you try contacting the security, they might have the CCTV footage.

    • actually did a little more research, if you hardwire it to your battery it should stay on even if you turn off the engine.

    • A camera might be able to capture that, but it's not useful if it captured only the side of a vehicle. The car park security might be able to show all white vehicles exiting during the time you were parked though, just a thought.

  • +1

Can anyone comment on the authenticity of this particular device? Apparently the G1W is made by a handful of different manufactures with no proper quality control between them.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9OSqh1Ypseg

    • Using the term "quality control" in the purely ironic sense, of course.

    • Not possible without risking it then cracking one open when it arrives. I too had concerns whenever I bought mine and I sometimes bought 40 at a time (Christmas presents and/or buying for others) however after cracking one or two open from each lot I've found them all to be genuine. Not saying these are or aren't but from my experience they should be OK. Refer to my previous deals to see the inside pics.

  • I would grab a A118C instead.

    • Are they the same price?

      • Yeah similar price range last time I looked.

    • Why, what's different?

  • I had a very bad experience with these cheap but poor quality thingy. One is a battery version that worked for a few weeks then constantly crashes during recording. The other one was this capacitor version that worked well for about a year then started crashing again. Tried different Micro SD cards, even the new Samsung Evo 16G and 32G, same results. Like other said, the menu is crappy and both of them have the same issue of the buttons just not working, cannot change date, etc.

  • -1

    Hi!

Are there any new or existing owners who know whether the screen can be switched off during recording?

    Thanks!

  • Got mine today. Looks good! Realised I have no micro SD card to put in it =D Recommendations
