This would be the cheapest I've seen the starter kit - normally retails for around $149-$179. The LED globes are normally around $60.

  The Lifx ones are full color should be brighter (1000 lumens vs ~800 lumens) and don't need the hub.

PSA if on Android. Don't use the offical WeMo app. It is junk. I find this one to be much better.

  No, coz it communicates with the inter webs via the hub.

  You need the hub to talk to the bulbs - the hub does connect to IFTTT though, so it may work.
