Jide Remix SK1-W Ultrabook, Is It Worth It?

Hi guys, saw this on GearBest Pre-Sale page. The features that attract my attention were: FHD and comes with keyboard. And given it will be used more like laptop than tablet, Remix OS I think is better than Android. I know it is based on Android, with an interface suited more for laptop.

Would appreciate if you can share your thoughts. Thanks.

  • This is an interesting device. The problem is that it runs a pretty old soc. Tegra 4 came out in 2013?

Also its not x86. If it actually ran Windows it would be more attractive to me.

I think people will have problems with the o/s being a fork of android.

    • Agree it is interesting, but too many limitations.
Perhaps if you need a lightweight travel/classroom machine that supplements your main desktop?

    • Cube iWork for $155 USD

      X5-Z8300
Win10 license and 4GB of RAM

smaller 10.1 inch display however, with 16:10 aspect ratio

$43 USD extra for the keyboard dock makes it $198 in total.

Sounds like a winner just from the spec sheet.

      • Hi @scrimshaw, I agree it is better value. Anyone here has Cube device? I have a Chuwi device and the screen is not really good. It is not like glass, rather plasticky and dim, although it is a FHD screen.

Also, though it is not top consideration but I like Jide's design more than the Cube one.

        • I used to have a Cube U30GT. It was OK, the build quality is below average, the included charger was also very poor quality and because of that, 2 years of use later the battery swelled up like a balloon (pretty much destroying the tablet) and it was no longer safe to keep.

Tossed it and I figured that in the future I will buy a branded device that will eventually get a discount every EOFY sale anyway.

Just buy a Acer R3 if you don't want to worry about getting a chinese lemon tablet.

Example, This for $350 bucks and you can get back a $50 dollar eBay voucher

Also has 4GB RAM so it's not completely crap for multitasking either. It just needs an SD card for more storage and it's a pretty decent device!

        • @scrimshaw: I suppose we can't stick in an SSD to this device? Any reports on Linux installed on this? Otherwise this looks really good. Thanks.

        • @peuwayaqdq:

if you can spend $500 in total, there is a variant with a 500GB HDD. I suppose in this variant the HDD is just your standard 2.5" drive so it should be OK to replace yourself.

If you bought the cheaper variant with eMMC, it might not even have a SATA port!

It also comes with a much faster Intel Pentium N3700 (2.4ghz Turbo clock) processor. This processor is able to support up to 8GB of RAM, but it's most likely that you can only install one DIMM.

As for linux compatibility, that is unknown

  • +1

Take a look at Jide's list of supported devices. Some like the Onda OBook can be purchased with Remix OS preloaded while others like the Nexus 9 have a ROM for it.

Jide are going to be releasing a new tablet called the Remix Pro with Remix 3.0 so it might be worth waiting for that. AOC will have all-in-one's later on and Allwinner have already shown off laptop prototypes ;)

  • Remix OS is solid. I wouldn't be concerned about it not being compatible with anything *droid. The chipset is a little dated but the GPU capabilities are still somewhat comparable to new SoCs. 2GB of ram is a let down … if this had 4GB ram I'd get one straight away. This would be perfect for a sysadmin/devops as a portable SSH terminal.

It really depends what you want to use it for …

Check out the Chuwi Hi12 or perhaps even the Jumperpad2 @ a similar price point. Both are also available at Gearbest (ozbargain's favourite chinese vendor).

    • It's roughly neck in neck with Intel's Bay Trail platform
      http://www.androidauthority.com/tegra-4-vs-intel-baytrail-26…

So it's not as bad as it seems despite being made in 2013. It can do the basics without too much problems.

The only thing you got to be worried about is the lack of warranty i suppose. If it dies then you're up the creek.

      • For CPU performance yeah but GPU the NVIDIA outperforms by a wide margin … and unfortunately they are still making baytrail devices in China :(

    • Check out the Chuwi Hi12

CHUWI are going to be releasing a Remix OS version of the Hi12 later this year.

      • If I get one it'll be a Linux MATE distro all day long :)

        *droid != *nix

Windows are meant to be transparent … Microsoft is anything but.

        • You're really limiting your choices there…. Aquaris M10 is the only one I know of. Tablet manufacturers are using Cherry Trails far too much and they don't play well with Linux.

        • @Clear: They don't play nice with certain kernel versions but seem just okay with other. I'm sure I'll do okay. I'm the sort of person that writes a driver module for a wireless USB dongle instead of buying a compatible one cause I'm cheap and can.

        • I know right. Looking for Ultrabook (sort of Surface form factor) at this price point running Ubuntu… That would be perfect.

      • I wasn't happy with Chuwi Hi8's screen. Wondering if this is going to be any different.

        • From what I've seen it's using the same display as the Surface 3. Apparently it's lowest brightness setting isn't suitable for night time though.

        • @Clear: Think that's the Chuwi Hi12 with the Surface panel.

        • @kywst: Yeah that's what I meant since he was replying to my comment.
