Travelling Advice From Amsterdam To London

Hi again,

Need some advice again, still waiting on marriage certificate, thought I would organise a
trip from Amsterdam to London, as my daughter and self want to visit son in London, following
our European cruise that daughter won.

Booking online was cheap but we have checked baggage from cruise, all sites added $40 x 2.
Is there an alternative to not paying extra baggage please. There was no spending money
I am on a pension this is a dream come true.

Thank you in advance.

  • Hi,

So, from Amsterdam to London are you Flying with KLM?

If you prepay online @ https://www.klm.com/travel/au_en/prepare_for_travel/baggage/… there is a discount as opposed to paying at the Airport.

Not sure where marriage certificate comes into this!
But from what I understand u r in Amsterdam or will be and want to fly to London with luggage without paying extra for luggage

    Only option is

    1. Find someone to leave it with
    2. Wear it as clothes on way over and try and make as small as possible
    3. Combine luggage so only one has to pay for it
    4. Bin some of it
    5. Hide it in bushes
    6. Leave it somewhere which has lost property and then find it when you get back, maybe the cruise liner
    7. Find lockers at a train station / airport and leave in there

You could look on web site blablabla to find a ride share, if u haven't already paid for flights and don't mind driving to London

    I have done option 2 and 3

You do have contingency money in case anything goes wrong? Europe is a very expensive destination, even if your flight and cruise is "free". You even have to pay to use public toilets in some places. I am concerned for you as your budget seems to be $0. Are you getting travel insurance?

    • Hi sparkles,
I received a cash advance from centrelink for a $1000 which will help
I have travel insurance had to pay extra as I have some preexisting challenges.
I need oxygen for flight had an altitude test
Thanks for letting me know re money for public toilets

I would be worried if I was only going to Europe with so little money. There are so many hidden expenses involved with overseas travel.

    Some possible options:

    1. Store your luggage at the hotel you stay at in Amsterdam and take carry on only or take a reduced amount of luggage. Many hotels will let you do this for free.

    2. See if there is a cheaper airline or flight available. For example a quick search reveals that you can get return flights for $172 AUD. London has multiple airports to choose from. Do you know which airports will work for you? What dates are you travelling? Click here to see some different flight options.

    3. Take the train? Apparently the Eurostar can get you there in 5 hours however it may well cost more.

Bus is a really good idea

-It won't be too comfortable, but better than the plane from Australia to Europe.
-It will save you the cost of a night of accommodation as well - you could get a bus around 9pm in Amsterdam, and arrive in London around 7am
-Getting to/from airports is often expensive. Buses arrive in more central locations it is cheaper to get to/from
-You would experience the ferry from France to the UK
      -Big luggage allowance

Here is a review of what it is like https://www.tripadvisor.com.au/ShowTopic-g188553-i58-k482351…

If you are not a person that does well after a night of interrupted sleep it might not be worth it if you knock yourself into jetlag again. But otherwise it solves the budget problem and the luggage problem. Try Eurolines, MegaBus, Ouibus, you can probably get return tickets even cheaper than plane tickets

Visiting your son in London sounds nice, but if he is asking you to carry back his excess package he should perhaps pay for it. Or he could investigate returning his things via sea mail instead and let you just enjoy the visit.

      • Thanks for that link to trip advisor and the other information, interestimg idea especially coming from Australia with the UK landing tax adding a lot to an airline tkt.

Would be interesting to see the difference in cost flying into AMS versus flying into LHR with the extra charges flying to London. I know people fly from Alus to somewhere much closer as that tax is based on the length of your journey to get there, as I understand it.

  • Thanks everyone for all your wonderful ideas have decided to fly due to my health challenges .I have a paralised Diaphragm with breathing challenges.

  • Bon voyage.

    • Thanks anna10 much appreciated
