Microsoft Band 2 - $268 @ Harvey Norman

360

Saw this while looking at Surface prices online. A great price for a great product. It's not the best fitness watch or the best smart watch but I've found it's one of the best hybrids on the market at the moment, especially for this price. It works on Android and Apple as well as Windows Phone and just recently got an update to be able to use Cortana on Android. I bought one three months ago and can't see myself without it now.

Note: If you do go in store to buy one make sure it comes from batch 16xx. There have been reports that Microsoft has updated the wristband material to be thicker/stronger due to many people complaining and returning them due to the silicone on the band tearing. You can check the batch number by looking on the bottom of the box. Don't let that put you off getting one though, it's easily claimed under standard warranty which is what I did with mine after it happened. 😉

  • what's the battery life on this?

I don't want to have to charge it every single day

    • 2 day battery

    • +2

It's advertised as 48 hours, although most people say that you get around 30-40 hours of regular use. I haven't fully tested the battery life because I charge mine every morning when I have a shower and the next morning (because I use the sleep tracking every night) I have about 40-30% battery left.

  • Been wanting this for quite sometimes but put off by the fact it is only water resistant, could not use it for swimming. Just wondering any owner out there possibly know any solution to make this water proof?

  • Any affordable smart watch that I can measure heart rate and talk phone calls?

    • Yes, but how much you want to spend?

      • Thanks for the reply PW.
Need a brand one with accurate heart rate measurement. Say around 150-300 price bracket?

I like xiaomi band2 but it can't answer phone calls.

The new Pebble Times - due in a couple of months would be good without breaking the bank, and battery life is out of this world

      /end fanboi rant :)

      • Thanks shmahoo. That Pebble Time 2 looks interesting. Does it need a phone to be functional though (phone calls)?

        • I've ordered PT2. It needs to be tethered to a watch to work properly and doesn't allow you to make calls through it. Does display caller though and allow you to accept or reject. Hope that helps.

      • My original Pebble Watch gets me 8 days of battery life, 6 days with Bluetooth enabled and it does everything I need and looks pretty sweet with a NATO strap on it.

      • Thanks broot. I would prefer a brand one. :)

      • can get ones like that from aliexpress etc for probably closer to $30 or $40, and not guaranteed to work as well as a "brand" one such as Pebble. the clones might be OK for a kid or hobbyist, but go for a brand if you want it to work work.

That's ugly, get a Samsung gear fit2 instead.

  • Not only is it ugly, It's also pretty uncomfortable to wear. But it has a impressive suite of sensors and it's fitness tracking is also apparently excellent

I don't find it uncomfortable at all, the only way I can see it would be uncomfortable is if you wear it with screen on the outside of your wrist, it's quite awkward to use that way when it's made to be worn on the inside of the wrist. Although it does allow you to wear it on the outwards, I find that it feels more natural on the inside.
I haven't fully put the fitness side of it to the test but so far it's been pretty great on the bike riding side of things.

      • Everyone said 'wear it screen inside' before I picked one up but it bangs up the screen. Plus I had to remove it every time I needed to type because you can't rest your wrists on anything comfortably. The band does some great things, but comfort is not one of them. Had to return it because I couldn't sleep with it either.

    • Not uncomfortable at all.

Own this and the Jawbone Up3 - I prefer the Band's functionality and don'f find it any more uncomfortable to wear than the Up3.

^ Has a portrait of Steve Jobs above his bed head.

      • You mean on one of the support pillars on the bridge he lives under, that's where trolls live don't they?

The first Microsoft Band came out 6 months before the Apple Watch. How embarrassing for you

You're getting a neg for stupidity, not for being a fanboi.

People have been making smart watches or trying to for over a decade.

Yeah i think this is now old tech (less than a year though in Aus!)….now latest and greatest at similiar price point seems to be Samsung Gear fit 2.

  • It has a lot of functions, but is heavy, bulky, and hard to wear all the time.

  • I have searched far and wide for a fitness band that has GPS and heart rate tracking. Does anyone know of any options other than this?

    • If you are serious get suntoo http://www.suunto.com/en-AU/Products/sports-watches/Suunto-A….
New spartan range is coming up so their ambit range price should come down anytime soon.

      • I thought Suunto doesn't haveoptical HR tracking so you may need a strap…

        • Strap is better - Optical HR tracking is not accurate.

      • Cheers. I'm looking for something that can track my distance covered and HR when I play soccer. Would be tough to get away with wearing a watch while playing.

To a lesser degree I would also like to track my runs and mountain biking.

        • If you are using it to track your HR while playing soccer then go for the one chest strap HR sensor… otherwise get Forerunner 235 which should have everything you need with ability to connect to ANT+ devices
