How do you get Sydney Morning Herald to not autoplay video on mobile?

First couple of times it happened I thought it was because I accidentally tapped on the video.. Then I realised that it always happens.

Anyone know a way to stop this? It's bloody annoying, not only from a wasting data point of view but also if you're listening to music and all of a sudden an article which you were just intending to read is now being read out to you over your music.

Actually on another note.. What websites do you visit to access news?

Oh, also I use Chrome browser (incognito mode to get around the 30 articles/month limitation).

      Yea auto play is annoying..

  • i use firefox and it misses some sort of plugin to play the file, guess the only way is to remove that plugin from your browser, on PC there're add on for it but not on mobile I think. Firefox has incognito mode as well, and you can install adblock but it work intermittently.

Don't have any autoplay issues with the paper copy

Haha uh how do I get the paper copy on my phone? :P

  • I'm on Android using Chrome or the stock browser and neither autoplay SMH videos. The desktop browser version has a timed autoplay, but the mobile version doesn't play unless I tap it.

It is, however, really easy to accidentally tap the video component before it loads when you're trying to scroll past the headline because my thumb scrolls right where the top of the video element is.

To test if it's truly autoplay, click a link and do nothing else (no scroll, no clicks) and see if it plays. I just tested it now and it doesn't play for me.

    • I just tried it.. doesn't seem to be autoplaying.. but I swear it does (sometimes)?

  • Android Firefox -> Advanced, Turn off Autoplay.

No idea on chrome… I couldn't figure it out.

Just curious - do you prefer Firefox on Android to Chrome? You use Firefox on both desktop and phone?

      • I use both and switch depending on how many ads there are on the site (Firefox Adblock Extension) and whether I need to use auto translate in Chrome.
