GTX 1080 EVGA FTW (or Other Top Tier Versions) UNDER $1000 AUD!

Okay, so I know some people are all frenzied over the 1080 release, and are trying to find it as cheap as possible, so I thought I'd share my plan.

Wait a week or so until cheap outlets like B&H Photo, or Newegg(though probably not newegg, since their shipping is ridiculous), start stocking them at close to MSRP.
Specifically, I'm going to buy http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1257992-REG/evga_08g_p… for $912.18 AUD , and (from memory) $30(roughly) shipping. That's about $950 AUD ALL UP for one of the best performing 1080's on the market (definitely OC to perform MUCH better than a FE @stock (probs like 10-15%!!! — that's the difference between a 1070 OC and a 1080 FE@ stock — which is a lot!)

INB4 "MUH TAXES"
The whole point of scouring places like Amazon and B&H Photo for cheap prices, is that if you can get them cheap enough what happens is they become substantially cheaper — and what I mean by that is, if you can avoid the $1000 + (total) tax that ends up moving the price to like $1150+ , by finding cards that are just below that threshold, you save a lot of money. The only draw back is a lack of local warranty — WHICH— shouldn't be a big deal considering places like Amazon have good warranties anyway, and if you manage to find shipping that keeps you below the 1k threshold, return shipping at the off chance you need it, shouldn't be a big deal anyway.

PLEASE DON'T BUY THEM ALL AND MAKE ME WAIT! lol

Alternatively, if someone finds them cheaper, please let me know! And if someone thinks there's something wrong with this plan, PLEAAASEEEE LET ME KNOW!!!!

I hope this saves someone the time I've spent lol.

  • What is a "Top Tier" version?

Also overclocking is not something you should count on unless the card has been overclocked already.

'Top tier' being defined as, versions that have demonstrably better overclocking capabilities.
For example, the EVGA FTW edition has a fairly significant factory overclock, with a little bit of extra headroom for extra overclocking.
There is variation, even among the most expensive cards, so there is a fair amount of luck involved, but for the most part, the most expensive card will likely be the best/one of the better performing cards.

    • What..? Where did you get this information? Any and all of the 1080's can be overclocked, at least to some extent. One of the major building platforms for this architecture is that it can be overclocked. Manufacturers are literally creating their own software to HELP people overclock their GPUs.

To anyone else; you can ABSOLUTELY count on being able to overclock a GTX 1080, PARTICULARLY if it is not the Founder's Edition. This is due to a better cooling system on most aftermarket cards, allowing for increased overclock capacity.

      • Yeah pretty much this^

When it comes to warranty concerns, just buy an EVGA card.
EVGA give a 3 year international warranty on their cards (don't know about their other products).
I bought an EVGA 980ti over a G1 Gaming (same price during a sale) from Newegg for that reason.

  • This is my current plan.

    • Wait a week or two after the RX 480 to be released in Australia to see if it does anything to prices.
    • Buy the GTX 1080 from an Australian retailer using a credit card with Price Protection e.g. (https://www.28degreescard.com.au/credit-card-features/)
    • After 5.5 months claim back the money for the price drop

    Any flaws in the plan?

I just need to do some research on who a big Australian IT retailer is as you can only claim back from the same Australian store however the store can be in a different location. Any recommendations on which may be a good store to do this for?

I will also use the below site to email me when it detects a price or page change.

I'm travelling overseas soon so there is also the tourist refund scheme that may give say $100 back for a $1,000 card. (price you paid divided by 11). I don't really want to travel with a GPU in my bag though.

  • so i guess there are no 1080s priced in the same range as the $850 ones from a few weeks back?

Not right now I don't think. They're struggling to supply them I think. Not to keep beating the same drum, but I really do think in a couple of weeks you'll start seeing them in stock a lot more, and with that will come those lower prices.
