  • Good price. Although not as good as A$326 few months back.

Quality drives (so far!), but slightly noisy.

    • +1

Ordered one at $326, needed another to replace a failed disk (an older wd red).

Noise is okay, but it depends on how sensitive you are about this I guess.

My microserver has 1x hgst, 2x wd red, 1 x wd green, and 1 hp something(?). Currently sits in the corner of my lounge room. Would like to move it, but not desperate to do so. Normally don't notice it, only due to lack of noise when powered down or outages.

Have asked wife about it several times, but she cares less about the noise than I do.

      • Mine just sits in a cupboard in the end room hooked up to power and network. Used to use it as a HTPC but now just file server/torrent box/Plex server.

      • Yeah, I have mine in a home theatre, no one is there long enough to complain. And generally the noise from the TV is more than enough to drown out the noise. It is only ever an issue when im sitting right next to it.

  • ok, so ive just bought 4x WD red's 6tb and need a 5th (I forgot I had 5x drives in the HP Microserver) - would you think I could get away with this 5th one being the HGST or should I just get another WD RED?

    ….and GO:

    • Which Microserver u have? and what config? standard?

one of my microserver gen8 had been upgraded with an e3 xeon cpu with 4 x 6tb hgst, 1 x 240gb ssd, 1 x 8gb microsd, with an ibm pcie hba controller. If i work this server to a full load i'll be straining the 150w psu to death.

      • Ahh of course:
        N54l 8gb ram
        Running freenas v9.2x
        Raid 5 zfs config

Currently in the middle of a 4th drive restripe onto 4th newly purchased wd red 6tb.

        Thx!

        • no problems mixing the hgst into the equation.

        • @j03:

          Ok then. Awesome! Thx.

        • FYI: Also, for extra piece of mind, Hitachi is basically WD… and as of this year, so is SanDisk.
The next gen drives should have shared tech. It wouldn't surprise me if the HGST Drives are being assembled in the same factory as WD Drives. I could probably check, I have 2 sitting in my laptop right now.
I just wish they acquired SanDisk as early as Hitachi so that the Black^2 Drives might have had the SSD portion performing better because they could just steal all of SanDisk stuff…

  • Have been keeping a very close eye on these drives. Saw this at $313 the other day - and as per normal, I procrastinated… and it shot up to $340 approx not long after.
The free shipping is a 'now and then' bonus - so this is a pretty good offer!

HUGE shame that 3x comes in at $1005 for GST :(

    • +1

So why not just order two in one shipment, and one in another seperate shipment. That brings it under the GST limit. Also free shipping applies regardless, so splitting them is a no brainer.

      • you are right - and I don't have a reason why I did not follow that very obvious approach :) Esp as I was after 4 of them.

      • So why not just order two in one shipment, and one in another seperate shipment.

        Because:

If there are multiple packages to the same addressee arriving
in Australia from a single consignor overseas, the value of
all packages may be combined for duty and tax assessment
        purposes.

        • Send it to some else's address.

        • room mate's name. wife's name. parent's house. the possibilities are endless if you put some thought into it.

  • boo - they're $346 now :(

    • Thanks, I've expired it.

      • good deal tho! Nice work :)
