[Insufficient Quantity] Forza Horizon X360 at Harvey Norman Bondi Junction $0.01 Rounded down to Free

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Went in to HN at Bondi Junction today to try and get a $30 500gb Hard Drive, they didn't have stock but that didn't stop the rep moaning about how $30 is too far below the cost price of 88 bucks (which is just ridiculous for that drive).

So I looked at the counter in frustration and there it was, a copy of Forza Horizon for 1c. The girl at checkout ran it through, and when it rounded down to zero she approached her manager, who thought for some reason I needed to pay $1 at least. I told him the 99c they would gain wasn't worth the the fall out of the email I was going to send Gerry, who'd probably frown on the multiple issues with this sale, the 1c price along with the clear 'not for resale' logo on the disc, they eventually begrudgingly gave it to me after two other reps agreed that not to would be false advertising.

Hopefully some professionals out there can validate this deal elsewhere and score more free games!

MOD: There is insufficient quantity for this to be posted as a deal. Moreover 1c marked price is most likely to be sold with a console.

Oh man, I paid $23 for it at EB……

    • +3

I now have a collection of about 40+ games, most from the $1 JB sale, and random other places along with Games with Gold downloads, I think I only paid more than 5 bucks once, and that was for Skyrim which was 10 at Target from memory. Too bad I don't have time to play them

      • I've used an Aptamil 6 tin box to store my XB360 games (alphabetically), most of them from EB/JB/Target/EBay, but wasn't as lucky as you are lol. Then another box to store my whole bunch of Lego games. Haven't played any of them. Too bad.

Sounds like a typical Harvey Norman experience to me. Absolute muppets they are.

The girl at the counter was sour as a lemon, when I told her I didn't need the bag she said nothing, and the when I asked if she wanted the 1c I got a short 'no'.

I don't get why people would be so pissed off, it was as if I stole it from their mother

      • +15

maybe she wanted the free game

        • +5

or at least play it together with OP. =P

        • +2

Depending on their POS system they may have stats at the end of shifts that show your "average sale value".

Putting through a $0 sale will (profanity) up their stats potentially affecting the cashier for a bonus or whatever.

It's dumb as shit but that's how retail works.

        • +1

@thord: Define POS! I think there are at two possible but equally valid definitions of this acronym given the context of this story… one retail technology, one urban dictionary!

        • @thord: I have never heard of anything like this. It sounds made up.

      • +3

Wow, I'm sure the cashier just didnt want to get in trouble by putting through the game as $0.00 since they nearly never put things through for free on it's own unless it's a bonus with other products. That's completely understandable if you view the situation from her perspective - you didnt have to ask her if she wanted the $0.01 in the end to insult her.. gee, Im sure you won't give it even if she did asked for it.

        • Yeah because you were there

        • +2

lol, doesn't even make sense.. but OK then.

        • Why would she get into trouble?

        • @Diji1: A cashier's job is also to ensure items are booked out at the correct value. IF the $0.01 was an error and she booked it out as $0.00 when it wasn't, then she will be held reliable.

        • +1

          @Diji1: because of hyperbole

        • +1

@AuggieW: Google: Did you mean responsible?

        • @chudson: Nah I meant reliable at the time, it shoulda been responsible. XD And if it was Google; it wouldve asked do* you mean, not did you mean since Google wouldve almost instantaneously picked up my mistake.

And Jackson, I'm sure only you would consider it as a hyperbole.

@xcess: yeah, who knows what that was about. As Beyonce said, if you want it, put a 1c sticker on it

        • +3

@Jackson: DS used to mark games that were part of bundles as 1c and they would use that to cancel orders online… Not sure why they were separated or put out for sale though, that's asking for drama lol, well done getting that for free (1 cent if they wanted to collect it)

      • Revoked.

      how about price beat?

  • +1

This deal needs to go down in the history books!

  • how many did they have?

    • Not sure, it was on a random counter near a non register computer that I guess they just use to look things up, but there could be any number, and I often see not for individual sale items going cheap

False advertising but every price is an offer to treat. That being said… I think it was probably meant to be rung up as $0.01 as part of an Xbox console combo. As in, buy the console, get the game for free. Not sure why it was out on it's lonesome…

    • +1

100% correct there, I've seen these in the console cabinet at my local hn, the tag says 1c, and the console price tags has it listed in the bundle

      • Interesting, but I don't think they still sell 360s so what else would they do with them? Hopefully some people jag one

    • until the cash/payment and item exchange hand, there's no obligation to sell

  • Thank you. Come again.

  • Hahahaha very nice!!

  • +5

Reminds me of the local milk bar years ago, the guy used to get the promotional packs of cigarettes like two packs of cigarettes and a lighter, or two packs and a book of 4WD tracks in Australia etc (was Marlboro), and he would split them up, put the ciggies into the racks while selling the lighter for a dollar lol

Nothing gets me more annoyed than when salespeople quote bullshit cost prices. I just find it really insulting that they think you would actually believe it.

    • +1

I show about as much concern as they do about my overheads.

    • -2

Why do you think their fake? A lot of items in the store are under cost - infact every hard drive they sell are all under cost - they just sell them for the sake of competition. Infact, nearly every item in the monthly brochure are under cost or at cost. Don't blame the franchise or store since I believe it's the choice of their head office or admin. I have very close friends working at HN so I know this.

      • "A lot of items in the store are under cost - infact every hard drive they sell are all under cost"

        BULLSH*T!!!

They might sell them below RRP, but no way are they selling ALL their hard drives below "cost".
RRP and cost are not the same thing. RRP is the price retailers sell products for, "cost" is how much retailers buy products for. The difference (minus expenses; wages, rent, etc) is the retailers profit.
Why would Hardly Normal buy HDD's then sell them for less then they paid? How do you think their business model operates?

Just as an example Hardly Normal is selling WD Elements 2TB Portable Hard Drive: WDBU6Y0020BBK for $158
        http://www.harveynorman.com.au/wd-elements-2tb-portable-hard…

While MSY is selling it for $139:
        http://www.msy.com.au/pc-components/5415-wd-25-2tb-elements-…

If "every hard drive they sell are all under cost", what is the extra $19 for?

Dont believe your "very close friend"…

        • I can understand your point of view. If someone said hard drives were below cost I wouldnt believe them either. But I'm also someone who had worked at a very big retail. I can say for sure that the prices most stores sell them are below their 'cost' price, and yes I can firmly distinguish the difference between RRP and cost price (which by the way usually includes GST). Again, retailers usually sell at the cost price to begin with, but due to competition, the the prices just keep on falling. The only reason why some online stores, namely MSY sell at low costs is because most of their products are 'grey imports' which have low costs prices to begin with.

  • GG

  • Have purchaed various items from HN where it looks like the item has at one point been included with a bundle and they have sold them as a clearance item for next to nothing

    • +2

The sales guys would do better offering the "not for sale" titles as a sweetner to sell xboxes when they have no deals on. You know - hey mate, I have an extra copy of game X out the back thats worth $90 that I can throw in if you buy it today.

Now report them for selling a 'not packaged for individual sale' product. It's clearly for a bundle.

    Well done Op,

You are truely one of those professionals Gerry loves shopping at his stores.
    An Ozbargain professional strikes again.

Quote from the Herald Sun newspaper 29/12/2012-

Unhappy Harvey Norman customers say its online store reneged on a Boxing Day deal after a website bungle that could have cost the retailer close to $770,000.
Harvey Norman chief Gerry Harvey said a mistake occurred when uploading the sale price of an Asus tablet, which retails for about $800.

It was supposed to be discounted to about $600 but instead was listed as $122, the amount of the discount.

"It went up as a mistake around midnight and by 4am our people were alerted to it," Mr Harvey said.

But not before about 300 people snapped up 1600 of the bargain tablets, according to Mr Harvey, who said it was the work of professionals, not everyday consumers.

"It was obviously a mistake and they knew it," he said.

Mukul Singh and many consumer forum members said they had bought the Asus tablets in good faith.

The ACCC watchdog would not comment.

  • I hope you bought 2 OP.

  • +1

This has to be it. Close the site now…

  • Shouldnt this be in the forum given it looks like an isolated "I'm a hero professional" instance? Unless someone can confirm they can get 1c / free games elsewhere.

    • -3

Technically these are available in every HN, and if there are no more x360 consoles on sale they need to go somewhere, so I would argue that point, there's definitely more than 10 available across the country and I hope more people get the deal

      • +1

Markdowns are done per franchise at the discretion of the franchisee or the 2IC/Floor Manager and is according to their aged stock / price protection policies. This will differ depending upon each and every store. This is WELL documented in Ozbargain history and they do not have to honour anything even if you took another 1c receipt in to price match because it is not a true indicative or discounted price.
Just because some poor salesperson screwed up in one particular franchise, does not mean others will do the same in other franchises. Hence unless someone PROVES that they can get it elsewhere for the same price, this deal is no deal.

        • Technically I would call this 'orphaned stock', except this already has a 1c sticker on it, and isn't supposed to be sold separately. So they have the option to chuck it out, or give it away. I don't see what else they would do with this?

        • @Jackson: Hence why "Orphaned stock" is never a sufficient quality and is NOT classified as a bargain according to the rules of this forum. Under these circumstances and according to your account of the situation, they did not exactly want to sell it to you for the fact that it was marked at 1c and that it was not for separate sale. You had abused the customer rights to force a sale on a hesitant salesperson for something which they obviously should not have sold as part of their own T&C's with the distributor. Be thankful and feel lucky that you bullied your way to get this as another salesperson or manager would and should have declined you in the first place.

        • @bchliu: this is a complete role reversal from the actual facts of the case:

The item was clearly labelled 1c
The item was on display in a shop on its own, and not with the associated bundle (which to my knowledge doesn't exist)
The item did not display anything on it to suggest that it was a bundle item apart from a small printed on the sleeve not for individual sale, which 4 people there seemed to miss

I agree that it's not orthodox, but all responsibility for running a business is on the side of the business not on the customer side. Just because it's a peculiar circumstance, I have to disagree with you on this point (but we are adults, we're capable of that :)

(see silverrats explanation below, he agrees that it's for the store and not the consumer to decide, in this case, as there is a 1 from 1 chance of the store selling the item, who's to say it won't happen for more than 10 people?)

  • +1

I had the same thing happen to me at Target. If you look closely the game is suppose to be bundled with a console (it says not for sale). They no longer sell the consoles.
Its a great game, so all good.

  • +1

The "Not for Individual Sale" warning on games are directed towards stores, not customers (like us).

This stops stores from screwing up their inventory, where the number of sold copies could exceed the number in stock if said "Not for Individual Sale" copy sells (or, overselling). This explains why many games might have different barcodes or don't have barcodes at all.

  • Is it better with Kinect?

    • Will let you know when I get to play it, don't hold your breath though

    • Not really. It's only used for voice commands, which is handy for setting the GPS to direct to the next event.
However, remember that the Kinect usually sits in front of the TV, so if it's loud, it can mess the voice commands up and set random things on the GPS instead.

  • They've had this and Halo 4 for 1c at Harvey Norman at Browns Plains, QLD for a while now. I didn't bother to post as I'd just expect them to not give you the game for free.

  • +1

the only reason it has 1c on it is so it can be counted as a stock item and not be stolen by staff or if given away it can be traced.
its not so you can buy it for 1c or free

  • +1

The staff obviously didn't want to raise attention of the incident at a head office level and only reason they gave it away for free. It's clearly an oversight and most likely residual stock of the 360 console bundles - there were at least 2 Forza games that were included at some point. I would've approached this with a little more grace and willingly paid a $1 when requested, particularly if I genuinely wanted the game to begin with.

    • I didn't know why it was 1c when I went to the counter and the original rep didn't dispute it, so no reason for me to offer more, even the checkout person ran it and only thought it strange when it rounded down to 0. What people are complaining about here is actually that it shouldn't be sold at all, and the staff were always going to sell it for $1 anyway, which isn't the issue. So what people are complaining about was never even on the cards according to HN staff

  • Welcome to OzBraagin

  • +5

She works for HN. They are only allowed to smile if they have ripped you off, not if you get a good deal ;-)

  • Damn I noticed this a while ago at HN and they said it was only if you bought the console.

Edit: It says not packaged for individual sale

    • +2

Yeah same here I asked before.
