Great Indian Buffet in Rockdale, Sydney

Mandap at 434-6 Rockdale offers a great buffet at $12.90.
I spoke to the owner and he has taken authenticity to a fine art.
All furnishings were from India from the carpet up to the ceiling fabric.
I was impressed at his integrity in aiming for an authentic ambiance.
His vegetarian dishes -2 were excellent yesterday.
His Naans were done to perfection.
His rasagullas were divine mouth watering desserts.
I did not eat his rice [passe] or his meat dishes.
they have a dinner buffet at $19.90 which is more expensive but has more to offer.
[I might not be testing this.
As i am retired, I need to conserve my resources and live within my pension.]
They also have an Indian astrologer who gives free astrological advice on friday evenings.

  1. I previously reviewed Ambis and got slammed by the regular ozbargainers who seem to swoop on newbies trying to give back to ozbargain and discredit them.

  2. because I have seen good Indian restaurants fail for lack of support, I try to publicise them when I find them good. In this way we support better restaurateurs and improve the quality of life of all those who care about fine dining and Indian culture.

mm I love indian food and Ambi's has always been a great night out for my partner and me.
Will make an effort to try Mandap, thanks for the post!

    • I recommended Ambis once.
the flax I got was considerable.
I am wiser now to promote it through forums.
I am glad Ambis is viable now.
I live near Bankstown so do not go there.
do enourage others to visit good restaurants because I have seen an excellent one die in liverpool because of lack of patronage.

Find me some good India buffers in Melbourne pecca!

    • I live in sydney!
my modus operandi is to get the free indian magazines outside indian stores [free] and try out their advertised specials.
then I promote them so that they do not wither on the vine.
I have grown up with chinese indonesian cuisines and find indian the ultimate in culinary sophistication.
i have tried thai and vietnamese as well.
as a vegetarian I am linited in my food choices.

they ahve been taken over I think
went by and a pakistani place is now there.

    • Thanks for that. As you are a pensioner, you really should try cooking it yourself. Cooking is a very rewarding hobby/pasttime.

      • takes up my time now. stops me from doing other things. indian food is time consuming if you have not been taught from childhood.

Great post, definitely gonna try it out next time I'm nearby.

My fave place in Sydney for Indian food is Maya Masala. Incredible thali (stainless steel platter with small portions of various curries/dahl/chutneys plus bread and rice) and dosa. Cheap, authentic and truly delicious.

    • tell us the price, son!
i live near bankstown and prefer the suburbs to the city as hard to get to by public transport. and parking is difficult.
did not try the new owner as the buffet is gone!
not into pakistani as milder than indian.
and less veggie which does not suit me much.

  • do u have to pay for the drink or there is free tea or water?

    • I have not tried the new one.
      I do not intend to.
that offer of buffet value has gone.
it is another place where everything is quite expensive now.
the other was as well, but the buffet made it OK.
not a recommendation to try the new one, but an update that the old one has gone the way of the dodo.
I felt his principles would get in the way of profit in a mainstream which does not value high indian cuisine.
      it happened.

    • i thought restaurants were obliged to provide free [tap] water.

    • not chinese!
      indians don't give free tea!
water is normally free with indians
not sure of anywhere else though.
      they normally sell you water?
