I want to backpack around China/Hong Kong early January 2017.
When would be the best time buy the flights from Sydney?
Which airline?
There are heaps of sales going on at the moment but they aren't for the early January period.

January is peak season for flights in asia due to school holidays and upcoming chinese new year (2017 will actually be end of Jan) so it will be expensive
Best guess is to either keep an eye out for specials (possibly ask asian tourist operators in sydney) or buy them early
The current AirAisa MegaSale is for travel in January 2017…

You can usually get cheap flights in mid-January.
A quick search reveals that you can get $590 return to HKG if you depart on January 9th. Or leave on 14th January and you can get return flights for $450…

But this sale ends in about 24 hours.
Thanks for the reply! I was looking at flights within the first week of Jan, which are currently about $500+ for one way.
I noticed that since the sale started, the prices of these flights have also increased! I was hoping that after the sale it'll return to the prices before, which were in the $300s. But, like stated above,it is a bit of a lottery.
The prices increased because the sale fares sold out.
Update: The prices did end up dropping back down to the price before the "Sale". Is this some kind of ploy by AirAsia?
One way flight Syd —> HK is now $369 in early Jan, instead of the $500+ during the sale before.

:)
With airline discounted fares to anywhere its a lottery and Jan are school holidays here best of luck with that.
