Where to Buy Half a Cow in Melbourne for a Reasonable Price?

My Friends in QLD can get half a cow butchered for the cost of around $4 a kilo.
However, when checking online, there are some places that service Melbourne, but they charge the same if not more then what is sold at non bulk quantities when compared with the VIC market.

I was wondering if anyone knew of any place that services Melbourne folk at a reasonable cost.

Thanks

  • This always confuses me.

You hear about farmers being ripped off by the middlemen, getting pennies on the dollar for their produce.

So you wish farmers could form some kind of co-op and sell to the public direct. Easy nowadays with the internet.

…but every time they do, they cost more than the supermarket, not less. Look at these guys:

Yeh I don't understand how they can create a co-op then be more expensive, it must be greed?

They wouldn't need flash marketing if they were cheap.

      • Well when they succeed, they turn into the big man… ala Westfarmers who own Coles and now screwing farmers..

        same as the Milk companies

Someone need to create "air-produce" maybe where farmers can post their cows or veggie for sale without the need to create expensive individual seller website for it? ;p

I wish I had a fridge big enough to store half a cow. Must be at least 100 kilos worth of bones and red meat. The cops might think I butchered someone.

    • Just buy any chest of drawer fridge.
Half a cow is usually 80KGs.

That would be a light cow

  • Damn - I love this idea.
Someone do this in Perth - I'll take the other half carcass.

      • Ask around where? Its not like I live next to AACo…
I also have some concerns that slaughtering and butchering a carcass may be illegal for sale unless it is through a licenced abattoir - so not like I can put an ad on Gumtree either.

Anyone have recommendations for something like this in Adelaide? We used to have a guy for this when I lived in Geelong (May of been Otway Prime, but not sure as it was a while ago).

    • I'm in Adelaide too and would totally do this.

Why don't you just go to the cow store?

    top half or bottom half?

  • I am sure your friends in QLD can get a cow slaughtered and butchered for $4 per KG but how much would they pay for veal, weaner steers, yearling steers or even younger heifers.

  • So no recommendations then?

  • Just do a google search for "mobile butcher Melbourne". Plenty to choose from and they will be able to source/deliver/butcher/vacuum pack/label if required. I have used Tallangatta Abattoir (and others in the area) but it is on the NSW border.

  • Farmers and abbattoirs rarely deal with the public as it is just not worth it for them and a lot of farmers can't sell direct unless they have permits to have a 'farm gate' and even then your local supermarket would be cheaper as they would be selling their meat as premium product. The only thing I can think of is talk to your local butcher and ask if they can order you in what you need and you settle on a price then you pick it up a week or few days later. Maybe to you half a cow is a lot but for wholesalers who deal with restaurants, hospitals, etc it's such a small order you may not get a very good price or they simply won't deal with you as a customer, if they did it all depends on the cuts you want as well. I've worked in food service ordering, never seen porterhouses for that price but chuck steak maybe.

  • hey, is this still relevant? ive found a farmer right next to an abattoir that is wanting to sell me a cow at a great price, i'm happy to take half.

    • Yeah, let us know where and how much they are asking!

  • Hi. brenton100
. I'm interested. Is it still available?
