I have one of these razors and really like it. Paired with Astra Superior Platinums it's a super close shave.

    • Agreed, have tried with with pretty much every blade out there… Such a solid and consistent performer.

      • +1

I can't seem to find the Astra Superior Platinums on your website.

      • How many shaves can you expect per blade?

        • +2

As with these things, it depends on a number of factors… e.g. density and thickness of beard. However, I get about 4-5 good shaves per blade. Can stretch it out further if you want to save a bit but these blades are soo cheap, its hardly worthwhile. I would just get a pack of 100 blades (costs $20-25) and it'll last a few years.

Alternatively, if you want super sharp blades, look at Feather blades (Japanese). I find them a touch too sharp and often get nicks here and there but they last a bit longer but cost a bit more.

        • @astroboy38: Thanks. A final question: I usually shave in the shower - without foam/cream but I sometimes soap up my face to make it easier. Do you think these will work ok without foam? I had a cut-throat years ago that I got rid of because I couldn't be bothered foaming up for and don't wanna go back to that.

        • +1

@thevofa: I find shaving without lubrication of some kind pretty rough. having said that, depending on your beard/skin it might just be enough to lather a bar of shaving soap up between your hands the way you do regular soap and slop that onto your face.

        • +1

@thevofa: to answer a few questions. The blades we sell are the Bluebeards revenge blades and the MUHLE blades. Both excellent blades, I find the Bluebeards perhaps a slight sharper and both have good longevity.

I would struggle to recommend shaving without shaving cream/soap. You may get more pulling and tugging on the skin which can end badly… That being said, I wouldn't expect you would have any issues compared
To a cartridge. You have more control and less blades running over your skin, so once you got used to it, I can't see why it wouldn't work for you.

        • +1

@windupclock: I would never dream of shaving with a DE razor without cream. I value my skin too much and you can seriously cut yourself with these things (as you would know from cut throat days). If I go over a spot for a 2nd time without reapplying cream, the blade isn't very effective.

        • @astroboy38: I agree, I wouldn't recommend it. But I imagine if he's been doing it with a cartridge which pulls the skin more, the reduce in drag would help. If a cartridge grabs you, it can shred pretty badly. This safety razor is closed comb so the potential to shred yourself isn't as great.

For me shaving without creams sounds about as dangerous and driving without oil…

Biggest mistake people make is going from a shavette to a cut throat, the cutting angle isn't the same and people get a shock. I often have to remind people that a shavette is not a cutthroat and that mastering a cutthroat is significantly more timely. I generally use the cutthroats for beard styling when I grow one. Give you some nice precise lines.

I got one in the last sale. Would definitely recommend, especially for the blokes out there that suffer a bit of irritation from cartridge razors. Takes a little while to get used to and a little longer shave, but worth it. Plus, it works out a lot cheaper in the long run.

    • +2

Not once you get addicted to buying different soaps and aftershaves :/

But then it becomes a joy to shave rather than a chore.

      • +2

Taylor of old bond street sandalwood soap. Love the stuff.
Since moving on from a Mach 3 and canned shaving gel to a safety razor, shaving is so much better. It takes a little longer, but the end result is worth it

    • A ton cheaper. Cartridge razors use half the metal and sell 8X the price. It's ridiculous considering there isn't really much benefit.

  • OP: What's the difference between open and closed comb with safety razors?

    • +1

This would be best demonstrated with pictures. However, I'll give it a good shot. With an open comb razor, the safety bar underneath the blade has open combs in it that allows hair and shaving cream etc to pass through. Generally, you can get a more aggressive shave from an open comb and it take 2% more skill to avoid cuts.

Closed Comb basically has a solid safety bar with water run off grooves. It doesn't always give the worlds closest shave, but it is easier to use and people with sensitive skin find them a little more forgiving.

There's a whole science behind it, but that's the short version.

  • How is this a better deal then something like this http://www.shavershop.com.au/online-store/blade-shavers/mens…
$14.95 satisfies the bargain hunter in me and its not a bad shave either. I am using the Astra Superior Platinum blades in it though.

What if I informed you that is a rebranded Weishi that sell on Banggood for under $10 delivered?

Muhle are better quality and provide a better shave too.
Just a pity that they use pot metal/zalmak.

      • +1

Correct, these are Weishi razors rebranded and pride inflated for a TV sale series. Shave is usually very weak in these things. The safety bar is on a very subtle angle so
You won't be getting a close shave. Construction is cheap pot metal vs high quality steel. No contest really. I'll agree that these are actually pretty good for 8 - 10 bucks (what you'd get if you bought a Weishi on eBay) but beyond that they are unbalanced and I wouldn't dream of selling them.

At the end of the day I want to sell products that are worth their money. This is a boutique store afterall. There's heaps of places you can get cheap mass produced Chinese razors. Even at $10 I can't justify selling these because they really are an inferior product compared to the likes of MUHLE, Murkir etc….

My first safety was a Weishi, I still have it but never use it. Got me into wet shaving, but once I got a MUHLE, never looked back.

        • +2

Agree. Once you feel the weight and balance of a good razor, you will never go back.

        • This is my first safety razor, was going to by a new pack of mack3 blades but this was almost the same price so thought I would give it a go.

It looks the Micro Touch One Razor has a bit of a reputation that I was unaware of. Not sure about the pot metal claims the packaging says "Chrome plated Solid Brass" could it be it just looks like the Weishi?

Anyway after my first five consecutive shaves I would caution anyone who is think about moving to a safety razor, it's a process and you need to take your time.

        • @Tamps: Weishi has a pretty big monopoly over Chinese Safety Razors. And there are so really really bad ones too… Some cheaper ones that come out of Pakistan are so poorly built that they look dangerous to use.

Like all things, there is Chrome, and then there is Chrome. The chrome on this is so thin that with consistent use the handle won't have any in 6 months. It probably is brass… but brass mixed with other cheaper metals… If it was good quality Chrome/Brass, it wouldn't be in that price bracket. My first Weishi looked 40 years old after 6 months.

I think the process is harder with these razors too… you are more likely to cut yourself because the balance is so bad. It means that you'll apply a bit of pressure because the weight is all wrong. If you have a balanced razor, you tend not to push it or manipulate it as much and it results in less cuts. That's why you'll notice that high quality safety razors either have a long handle or a short fat handle. It's all about weight and balance.

        • @Tamps:

          https://www.instagram.com/p/BGvYBeEu_Qn/

Here is a picture I quickly uploaded to instagram for you. It's a Weishi comapred to a Parker razor I don't stock (to be neutral).

Notice how the Weishi (left) stop bar comes out and drops… The Parker slopes immedietly.

This is why Weishi gives a soft shave

        • @windupclock: I have not been able to get back to this page until just now. Thanks for all of your input and advice it has been very helpful. You're definitely right I have had a few nicks here and there, nothing too bad though. I expected this for the first few weeks though.I was not able to view your link as it says its not available or it is broken.

        • @Tamps: sorry about the link being broken, I took it down from my Instagram after 12 hours because it was a random photo amongst all the others shots.

Essentially, it was a comparison photo between your razor and MUHLE razor, you could see the differences in construction and how the stop bar was engineered differently to compensate for the lack of strength the weaker razor has. As a result it was a bit mkre clunky and stuck out more meaning you need to play with the razor more to keep the angle right. The MUHLE had a perfect slope which gives more control and a comfortable resting angle.

  • Is it a bad idea to use these razors with a mole on your neck? using the pro-glide at the moment and they work fine but costly.

    • Hi there Trantor, don't mean to sound nosy, but important so o can answer your question properly. Is it a flat mole? Or does it sit noticeabley higher than the skin around it?

      • its slightly raised, enough so that i can feel it with a finger.

        • Provided that you Prep your skin properly, I can't see too many issues. An old school shaving cream will always give your face more moisture and a better prep which leaves you less vulnerable to cuts.

That being said, Pro-glide is from the Fusion line…. Controlling one blade over your skin will always be easier than controlling 5 blades. With a bit of practice, you have a lot more precision. Closed Comb razor like this will be your friend too… I wouldn't recommend you using an open comb as it will possibly let the blade dig in.

Without seeing etc, it's hard for me to give you a precise answer, but I really doubt you'll have an issue with it.

    @windupclock:

thank you for the advice :)

As someone with sensitive skin, I have struggled with shaving for a while. A big reason why I treid wet shaving and why I started this store.

      https://www.shaverave.com.au/collections/shaving-creams-wax-…

This is my favorite shaving cream in existence. Really smooths out the skin and reduces irritation. I'm wondering if something like this would help you with softening your mole and making it less vulnerable…

      • thanks for all the help! :)

      • +1

Thanks for the recommendation, I just ordered a tube.

  • If anyone wants to pitch in here.

Have a look around the site, what items would you like to see put on sale

    • How about please stocking and selling the blade that you agreed was great in the first comment (and which you didn't reply to my comment)?

      • I did answer your comment, I wrote a comment about the blades I sell.

We do intend on getting Astra blades in soon. However I'm interested in getting them in bulk so I can sell pallets of 100 packs which is the most affordable way for people who have the space…

On the topic of Astra blades, whilst they are an exceptional blade, I wouldn't classify them as better or worse than MUHLE blades. In terms of sharpness and longevity, I find them close if not identical to MUHLE blades. Bluebeards are a bit sharper but I tend to get one less shave out of them.

When they do come to the store, I will definitely run a deal on them. Can't give a timeframe just yet though.

  • How long do you expect shipping to take? My order (Order #1033) is still at unfulfilled. Thanks :)

Just got an email to say it is on it's way, thanks!

Hi there, sorry about that. We weren't expecting the deal to be as popular as it was and underestimated the amount of people we needed for picking and packing. We pretty much cleaned out the Wharehouse so there was about 15 packages that were 2 days delayed.

        Kind regards,

        Alex
