Air Asia Extras Bundles - Are They Worth It?

I posed this question in a recent Air Asia deal, but didn't get an answer, and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with travelling with Air Asia in regards to this:

What am I missing with their "Value Pack" add-on? It's $58, but if I manually add the baggage ($25), meal ($5) and standard seat selection ($19) it comes to $49. What's the point in adding the value pack instead?

  • I guess it's a $9 premium/lazy tax for having to click fewer buttons?

    • That's my only conclusion, unless someone else can point out the flaw in my reasoning. Air Asia say it's worth $64, but I can't see how

      • Dont know how it is with Air Asia, but I will never pay more just to select a seat. Instead, I will go to the check-in counter a bit earlier, be nice to whoever serving you and ask. Always gets my preferred aisle seat :)

        • I have tried this. Didn't work for me. The standard check-in counter reply is to select a seat.

My flight searches are coming up with $39 baggage (up to 20kg), $5 meal and $19 standard seat selection. Total of $63 and as advertised the Value Pack of $58 saves you $5. Getting similar results for domestic Malaysian Value Packs with RM 5 savings.

What route are you looking at which gives you $25 baggage fees?

    • Hmm, maybe the $25 baggage was part of the most recent sale that was on? That might be it. I was looking at Gold Coast - KL return, in November

  • I'd say the pack is a standard price but the specifics will depend on the price of luggage etc.

  • Related, can someone confirm that if you buy a ticket without addons, then go back in later and buy those addons, that the cost is same? (eg, using bengal's example $39, $5, $19)

I think they charge more (about $10) for luggage. The rest of the addons have been the same price when I've done them later.

Luggage costs about 20% more if you add it later

      Food costs the same

      • Incorrect.

The value packs have to be done when buying the ticket, but your normal next page addition of luggage costs the same adding it individually up front or going to 'manage your booking' and adding it in. Same for meals.

If anything the main cost difference is if you buy luggage or a meal on the day itself, and not ahead of time.

        • The baggage costs extra added after initial booking now.. Air Asia changed their policy this year.

        • @Thrawn:

i'll have to check that in manage my bookings, but i found if it cost $5 more to go from 20 kg to 25kg luiggage at initial booking, after booking my flight, i could still add in for $5 more the luggage upgrade under manage my booking?

        • @SaberX:

It says that flights from Indonesia isn't affected. And I presume bookings made last year isn't affected either.

What I found is that they don't only add surcharge on the difference only.. examples:

          Pre-booking
          20 Kg $20
          25 Kg $25

          Post-booking
          20 Kg $25
          25 Kg $32

You don't just pay $7 extra to upgrade to 25 Kg. But you have to pay $12 (difference between pre-booking 20 Kg and post-booking 25 Kg)

  • You must be missing something as I have looked at it recently and indeed if you add up the individual sum of parts, the value pack saves you the money that it advertises. Usually it's nominal, but if you're going to get baggage and a meal anyway, and perhaps choose a seat you might as well.

I might add that a meal is significantly cheaper pre booking for the uninitiated, than trying to obtain it on flight. Not to mention it's usually run out - i always get the pak nasser nasi lemak, being the local cuisine, and it being bloody great.

    • Looks like the luggage was on special as part of the sale, down from $39 to $25, and that the cause of my confusion. Thanks for the tip about the nasi lemak, i'm a fan of it generally so will have to try theirs!

      • oh really? Drats, i booked a few seats last week too and i think some flights we thought we'd "add it in later" as it doesn't cost anymore. didn't realise it was on sale (the luggage)

  • Thought I'd add my 2 cents. The meal included in the Value pack is Air Asia's choice, you cannot specify which meal you have in your value pack bundle.

This was not clear when booking it, but live chat just said:

    Shaheda 4:41 pm-
KIndly be advise that value pack meal for your flight is
    • A hot meal (wrap) with mineral water.

So not sure if it is worth the saving it you wanted a particular meal or are a fussy eater.
