My friend got a quote to get a trailer from Brisbane to Melbourne and it was $400 for 4 days, does that sound right?

Thank you!

  • And back again, or do you need it only 1 way? Whats he moving?

  • Yeah, sorry. One way, I dunno one of those trailers you tow with your car. Wants to take a fridge, a couch, some boxes, that sort of stuff.

  • tell him he's dreaming….http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/clyde/trailers/6-x-4-trailer/1115903456

    • That's in Clyde, Victoria? He's going from Brisbane to Melbourne.

I've never been to Victoria, so Clyde,Geelong,Fitzroy, Adelaide is whatever to me ;)

….anyway my point is, is it worth buying a trailer and selling it at the other end? Otherwise $400 sounds reasonable no hassle kinda gig, just gotta make sure all the lights work when they pick the trailer up.

  • probably a bit small for what your mate needs, but maybe you can find something like this?

haven't done it myself, so can't vouch for it. But it appears that you can pay a small amount to help these rentals by moving vehicles across the country for them. Maybe if you could find one where they need to move a small truck/minivan…

Nuts not to buy one and sell at the other end.
I would probably buy new so it was easier to transfer rego (does VIC require inspections on trailers?).
Trailers are one of the few things in life that hold their value well, so you can buy and sell without much penalty.

I'm with him. $400 to hire? I bought new for around $700 + rego (few years ago now though). Could easily sell that for $400 at the other end. Picking up a second hand one with rego should be easy enough and you'll be even less out of pocket at the other end.

    • I agree. Have a look on Gumtree - usually some for ~$400 that would do the job.

Small trailers in Victoria for private use do not require registration but need to have the licence plate of the towing vehicle visible. See Vicroads https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/registration/new-registratio…

It used to be 6x4 foot trailers but now the size is less than 3m long including drawbar and less 200kg empty. Vicroads also sell exempt plates for trailers (which is an additional number plate of the car you use to tow).

So basically, you bring a QLD trailer use it for a while and then you can sell it without worrying about transfer in Vic. You would just deregister it in QLD.

    • hmmm it appears you can buy a 160kg 6x4 trailer with a GVM of 600kg. So it's not a terrible offer

The other option would be for OP to pallet and road freight his stuff. or to rent a van instead
