I'll be in Europe 7 weeks this July/August and I'm curious to know what other experiences people have had with data sims.
I'll have no one to call as I'll be in a new place every day or every other day so all I want is a bit of data to stay in touch with people and affairs back home.
I can save web browsing for when I'm connected to wifi but having a bit of data is easier.
I the past I have used global gig who had a different offer to what they have now.
I paid $50 a month for 3Gb of data that could be used in a bunch of countries. The service varied greatly from country to country. In the uk I had average speed 4g which was nice but it Italy it barely worked (and it was supposed to work there)
It doesn't seem that that offer any prepaid packs similar to what I got last time and they now require you to sign up for three months. Which isn't so bad as you can use the data in Australia (it's not cheap but it better than losing it)

The countries I'm going to are:
Norway
Finland
Estonia
Latvia
Lithuania
Ukraine
Hungary
Croatia
Slovenia
Italy
France
Portugal
Andorra
Spain
Netherlands
Germany
Ideally a travel sim would cover me for all those countries but I can understand that it might not.
Any comments of input on people's experiences would be appreciated.
UPDATE: I found a company that actually covers all the countries I'm going to and even has a referral system to "earn" yourself more data. I have 600Mb to use anywhere in the world just for signing up.
I also bought a sim and 1 years membership as well as a 1Gb of data to use for $35 US dollars. Unlike other sims I was looking at, the data does not expire after 30 days or so. The data is good for 12 months.
I hope this helps someone

In my last 2 trips to Europe I went on month to month Vodafone Red Plans (50/month on month to month) and paid $5 a day for international roaming.
Calls to within the country you are in are free from your mobile (heck handy for booking things).
Calls back to australia are free
SMS are free
You use whatever the data allowance is (i think at 50/month its 5gig)
Double check your country list, but I have used this roaming in Germany, France and Hungary A-OK without issue. At least 3g+ if not 4g speeds.
Not the cheapest way to do it, but 5 bucks a day is the cost of 1-2 beers (depending on how cheap you are) and I think it is well worth the convenience.
I cancel the plans as soon as I return home without issue
