Have You Ever Come across a Broden?

So over the last few days my wife decided she wanted to pursue photography as a hobby or part time career.
We therefore needed to purchase a suitable DSLR camera, we looked around at the likely cost being around the $1000 mark with lenses. We established a good camera to get but didn't want to pay the price tag. I decided to have a look on Gumtree and found the camera we needed for $750. The camera came brand new and sealed. We tried to get it down to $600, but compromised to $700. The buyer would not go any lower.

Fantastic! I then checked Ozbargain to see how cheap the camera had been previously. I found a listing from the DSE clearance sales for the exact camera @ $300 and $400 depending on when you purchased it. I then checked to see when the listing was first listed on Gumtree and found that the camera was put up on the exact day that it was listed on Ozbargain. Another interesting point was the seller had other cameras up for sale, new and sealed and also a few other items that had been listed on Ozbargain previously.

However I wasn't sure if this was just a coincidence or whether there was some truth to it. Whatever the case might be, my Wife wanted the camera and I wasn't keen on paying full price.

We decided to meet and I checked the contents and sure enough the camera was purchased at DSE at the exact date of the clearance sale. However the price tag on the receipt was crossed out. I smiled and decided to go through with the purchase due to above reasons.

We got home then checked over the receipt again, firstly to realise it was purchased from a DSE over 30km away and then to realise the real kicker - It was purchased with a 28 degrees card. I was then convinced by the true Ozbargainer calling card!

I have no animosity towards the seller, if you are reading this, just thought it was a funny story and thank you. I wish my Wife realised she wanted the camera when it was at that price. But at this point in time it was the cheapest available, so happy to pay.

Has anyone else ever came across a Broden? Good or bad experience?

Tell us your experience, or comment on mine.

Either way.

Have a nice day! :)

Pretty much what happened with the Moto X Style a while back. You see the ebay listings and gumtrees going up the same day or next day after it was listed on OzB.

One ebay listing even copied and pasted the specifications of the OzB listing.

  • if you need the item at that point in time, doesn't matter why it is coming from and how much lower it cost, you still save some money. Don't forget the Ozbarginer had to queue up and buy the item that may not have someone buying in the future, they take the risk.

If you really need it and it is the cheapest at that point then you should be happy you are able to get it cheaper.

I personally do not see any issue with this. You benefited from this and the seller as well. Why does it matter how much seller has benefited?

    • I never said I had an issue with what he did.

I don't think that buying something publicised on Ozbargain and reselling it later at a profit is what makes you a Broden.
It is buying up ALL of a specific deal (or all of them in a particular locality) for the express purpose of reselling it (ie you didn't need it for yourself) thus ruining the chance of getting a deal for everyone else that made you a Broden.

Being a Broden means that you are taking on a risk buying in large quantities, given that technology depreciates so fast. I probably wouldn't now, as I did the wheeling and dealing thing when I was back in uni. Too much work and risk for not enough gain. But then back when I was in uni, the minimum wage is about $5 an hour.

    • Being a Broden means that you lie about buying in large quantities.

      • I don't think you necessarily need to lie about buying in large quantities, unless you needed to lie to be able to buy in large quantities. :)

        • Broden became 'famous' here because he claimed to have bought multiple ps3 (or whatever console) and sold them for a large profit. However, it was later revealed that it was all a lie. So yes, lying is a big part of broden.

I think 80% of the people here don't actually know the meaning of broden now, it's like Chinese whispers.

Just like how everyone claims to be or know what a 'true ozbargainer' is….

        • @Ughhh:
Broden has become less about the lie he got caught in and more profiteering off ozbargain.
FYI there is no 'true ozbargainer' ;)

  • I came across a fair few at the Dick Smith sales. They were really into the cameras in particular as well. Buying up all the Lens kits. Audio was also a big one with some people buying 10+ pairs of headphones.

  • Wasn't there a guy a while back who was buying BBQs on Ebay during a 25% off sale or some such and reselling them on Ebay for a profit.

    • That was different, that guy was actually helping ozbargainers secure their Weber Q's.

      It was 50% off btw.
