  • Does anyone has experience on failing microSD cards ? I am scare of getting new cards.

I have a 5 months old Lexar 128Gb 633x. The initial symptoms were constant pausing in the music played from the card in my LG G3. After a week, the phone reported the card was unmounted unexpectedly. Subsequently, I could no longer mount the card for more than 1 minute. I had tried full format the card in PC (not quick format), format in the phone. The format has no issue, but the phone would not mount it for more than a minute. Not to mention about writing. I had also tried factory reset the phone to make it is not any apps that playing up. Lastly, I set up my Canon camcorder to format the card and try to record to it, it failed after 3 minutes of recording (maybe it reached its internal buffer limit).

The plus point was, it had no problem reading the data from the PC, which I could backup all my data before formatting.

In PC, it seems has no problem writing to it if it is formatted by the PC.

My point is, regardless the price of the card, reliability is still the primary concern. That is because the value of data is much higher than the price of the card.

    • I used to have an old 64gb Samsung PRO Micro SD. It was before they changed their colour scheme to the new Grey/White. At first it was flawless, read fast and didn't have any issues writing but now it'll give me a SD Card error in my GoPro every now and then and it's really annoying to find that your video stopped recorded 2 minutes in when you're doing something where you can't check it all the time.

I've got a bunch of the new Samsung 32GB pros and haven't had an issue yet though.

    • If the card is fake, you may have reached its real capacity, which would prevent you from writing to it. In this scenario, you may still be able to read your files from the card, and even format it.

Lots of variables, but even genuine cards do fail.

I've never had a problem with my Lexar 64GB card. I also have a number of Samsung cards that work fine.

I've had three failed SanDisk cards (bought from reputable stores), and one failed 'Samsung' card (bought from a dodgy eBay seller).

      • The issue is, it can read write on a PC, but not on the phone and camcorder. Lexar does not see that it is their problem.

From my point of view, the microsd card might have different data path depending on the connected device. In the camera, phone, it is using high speed data read/write. If it is attached to a PC via USB reader, it is just a normal data storage device with normal read/write. I suspect it is the embedded device data path that causing this problem.

      • I doubt it was fake since I bought it at MSY in store.

But it'd definitely been filled to capacity before.

I don't know how solid state storage works and bad sectors etc but it feels like once it reaches certain points of storage, it starts acting dodgy.

You can read write test the sd card. Here is the utility I used: H2testw

          http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Miscellaneous/H2t…

In my latest tests, it works perfectly on a PC from 0 to 128GB.

Later, I use the following utility to format the card before I insert it to the phone, instead of using the phone to do the formatting. Now it is not unmounting (1 hour +)

        • @fatice:

I take it back. Android app "SD card monitor" reported it has bad removal 3 times within 10 mins. It just happen at the back. If I have a lot of media on the card, the battery will be drained by scanning this new media.

    • very rare for a legitimate SD card to fail, but it does happen (happened to me once)

    • Mine evo 16gb died recently - writes fail, still can be read, bought in Australia. It was used in Raspberry Pi. I'm going to buy another one :)

  • +1

Evo plus not too bad for a few dollars more - 64GB at 24.76 after discount.

These memory cards are getting cheaper and cheaper the day goes by. I still have too many in the package unused so won't be buying anymore unless they're $10 for 128GB.

  • Hey guys, you reckon its worth getting a Sandisk Extreme 64gb for $40 or Samsung Evo Plus 64gb for $25? I'm gonna be using in my S7 edge but can't seem to justify getting the sandisk over the samsung but I'm still on the fence because I feel like I should "future proof" while I'm buying now… What are your thoughts?

    • depends on if you record 4k video or use it on computer as flash drive.
If not, Samsung Evo is good enough. Remember price of storage is always keep dropping.

    • 100% Anecdotally speaking, I put an EVO 128Gb into my Samsung phone, simply because it was a Samsung and figured, Samsung card in Samsung phone is guaranteed maximum compatibility (and the fact the EVO was the cheapest at the time).

In terms of future proofing, no such thing in the world of technology :) But .. if you wanted to get maximum usable life from an SD card in terms of speed, the PRO series is rather sweet, but so much more expensive… You can always get faster cards, but of course you pay more and $25 for 64gb seems like a good deal if its going to be used in a phone.

  • There's no mention but I guess it's safe to assume no adapter is included?

    • +1

Yeah safe to assume that - if the memory cards come with an adapter it would be mentioned explicitly in the titles of the eBay listings. Only the 16GB version comes with the adapter combo, $6.71 after 20% off.

  • Hmm bugger just ordered 2 and realised voucher didn't apply, seems like it works for single items only. Ah well $13 for a 32GB still isn't too bad as I've run out (!!!).

    • it should work for anything upto the max discount $1000 (?)

  • Planning on buying the 64GB but have read horror storied about fake cards even from reputed sellers. Does anyone know the name the software to verify if its fake or genuine?

  • Someone already asked about the SD adapter but has anyone received their order yet? I noticed on the Samsung website that some of them do.

  • 64GB is out of stock. Futu has it for $22.36 after discount.
